Quite a few are tested and reviewed in depth here and users have left comments
"Standard mechanical HDDs (hard disk drives) will benefit from defragmentation and continuous disk use, because when spinning it keeps remagnetizing the HDD plates. BUT if you own an SSD (solid state drive) you SHOULD NOT defrag or install any defragmenter application because it will shorten the life of the drive." I use ultra defrag but honestly I think their much of a muchness having used quite a few over the years http://www.techsupportalert.com/best...fragmenter.htm Last edited by buttsie; January 22nd, 2014 at 07:55 PM.. Reason: adding comment about ssds |

For years, I used to use Norton Speeddisk and thought it was top notch. It allowed to organize apps by importance and need. For instance, you want to have most of Windows at the very center of a disk as its the program that us used the most. But from that point on its up to you. I had AutoCAD and a database next as I mostly used them and needed the little bit of extra speed.
Don't even know if Speeddisk is around anymore but, if it is, it probably isn't free. Nowadays its about the only app from Norton I'd use. Oh, I use Defraggler nowadays and its OK. Its free but you can't organize apps like you could with Norton. I've had no problems with it. Give it a try. Just be careful installing it or you'll wind up with some tool bar you don't really want. http://www.piriform.com/defraggler/download |

I like defraggler but lately I've used the one that's included with AVG as it one less piece of software on an ageing laptop. It seems fine. Both are quicker than the integrated XP one.

While reading this thread and comparing the merits of the different defraggers, I discovered that my Windows 8 has a built in defragger running automatically, and it is doing a great job.
