I did get bad tummy one time after drinking ale that was 6 months out of date. But I had done this before and I was OK. Being an angler I know when fish etc is dodgy. But meat like say, steak. It says bin it. But it looks and smells Ok. I'm sure a few days won't matter.

There's a requirement in the UK under the Food Labelling Regulations, 1996, for the labels on most food products to display the "minimum durability" of the food. There are exceptions such as fresh fruit & veg, wine, any drink with an alcoholic strength by volume of 10 per cent or more, vinegar, salt, sugar, chewing gum, and various others. Somewhat amusingly, bottled water is not an exception so expect to see a date on the label!

Often the BB (that's the "best before" and not the billybunter!) has little to do with food safety, and is more about product quality. An advantage for the retailer is that it helps with stock rotation.

Honey has no shelf life. Jars of honey have been found in Egyptian pyramids 4,000+ years old that are still edible after it's been decrystalized.

I've had food poisoning myself, and it is not nice. I sat on the bog with a bucket in front of me. it took 5hrs for the sick and the rest to stop. I was so drained I just fell into bed and slept for 24hrs.

Nice enough I suppose,
but i doubt that any tests could have been done in such a short space of time (including the return of mail) and for some reason, now i feel fobbed off by the voucher too - after all, it wouldn't cover a couple of hours lost work.
It depends on what "tests" they'd actually done! The standard procedure would be to get the supplier to check the records of all the tests they'd conducted during the manufacturing process, as these are clearly defined and very stringent for high-risk products such as chicken. If all tests had been carried out with negative results, there should be no contamination.

The problem for the manufacturer when it comes to testing the returned product is that they can't know how it's been stored and handled prior to them receiving it. I'm sure you were careful, NIN, but not everyone understands what needs to be done, and that can include the retailer who actually gets the product back!

Standard testing for salmonella normally takes several days (I think that's still the case) and the rapid tests are prone to giving false positives. I reckon they went down the "due diligence" route by making sure their procedures had been in place, then hoped that a tenner would keep you happy! Of course, sometimes it's the way a retailer reacts that's as important as any financial compensation.

Fresh food is dodgy, best to stick to tinned or dried food, store for six months then check the internet for any problems if none, safe to eat.I once ate green chicken in India that was allegedly fresh, lost half my bodyweight in two months.

Weightwatchers would have been proud of me

I quite often eat food thats gone past their dates. Biscuits that are a couple of months out of date, tinned stuff even longer, provided it's been stored correctly and it's unopened it's fine. You're eyes and nose will soon tell you if it's off.
