My understanding is that the European crayfish are threatened by a non-native virus caught from North American crayfish.

American crayfish of all species are small. At least one species of Australian crayfish is quite large.

Yep that is quite correct, but no North American Crayfish no virus, which is probably why all our have banners with 'Yanks go home!' between their feelers!¬

Ours are really small, not much more than about 10 cm. So it's a lot of work for very little food - and they're expensive, unless you catch them yourself. But then you have to know where to look, and such places are usually well-kept secrets

According to the Environment Agency there are 6 non-native crayfish species loose in Britain's rivers of which the signal crayfish is the biggest problem. Introduced into the UK to be farmed in the 1970s, the inevitable happened - some escaped and, as they say, the rest is history. The Agency requires that non-native species must be humanely destroyed. I wonder, is that a euphemism for eaten?.

There is another invader in our waters, its called the Xander. Its a fish that apparently makes a Pike look like a wuss, theyre found mainly in the fens.
