The Catcher in the Rye has to be on my top five list for overrated books.

I do so agree with Mal Hombre about The Da Vinci Code. That's a couple of hours of my life I'll never get back. I don't normally feel that - there's usually something worthwhile in every book - but The Da Vinci Code is the exception.

Crime and Punishment. I had to read it in my high school English class. It's just dull. I think its reputation will slowly decline as the pseudo-intellectuals who worship Dead White Male writers slowly die off. I think the pretentious prick who assigned it to us kids back in school has.

You'd think a book about extramarital relations would be somewhat exciting but The Scarlet Letter is so effing boring, you couldn't make a decent porno movie about it.

I'm glad someone mentioned Moby Dick. Pop culture derives references such as "Ahab" and "Starbuck[s]" from this book; I think the coffee place sounds better than "Pequod's". But there is one fart joke you never heard of in that book:
Whoever denied it, supplied it! |

Moby Dick is a really hard read. I've got a quarter of the way through it in 10 years. Optimistically I've still got a bookmark in there!!!
I really struggled with Lord Of The Flies at school, but I sometimes think it wasbecause I had to study it rather than read it. Worst of the lot though is The Quincunx by Charles Palliser. This was pushed at me as the "Great Victorian Novel" reborn and so I took a chance. Over a thousand pages later I found myself searching for an ending that never came and through it across the room in a rage. Remember folks, I read it so you don't have to........... Avoid Peter Ackroyd's hugely popular biography of Charles Dickens whilst you're at it, totally unreadable. |
