I always ask windows to show me what updates it wishes me to download/install, then have a good look through to see if any of them strike my fancy. Most as has already been stated don't relate to home premium or other non-work based versions, so need not be selected at this point. Also, any updates for stand alone programs you don't have, or rarely use, can also be ignored & deselected; such as MS Office items you never use.

If you update your Defender or other chosen virus software often, then the security updates on offer can also be passed over. To be succinct, only download those updates you feel you really, really, need this time around. If it looks surplus to your needs then it quite often is.

Not installing updates won't hurt you, but installing the wrong ones will; every time.

I even gone into services.msc and disable the 2 .exe for Windows Updates.

I think the last time I updated Windows 7 was over a year go.

My computer has not crashed, has not been ransomware locked, hijacked, nothing.

20 years using a Windows PC and on the internet, I never gotten a virus or spyware on any of my Windows PC and this is the 6th one I owned.

All those Windows update reports you read about that if you don't get this or that now, your computer will be remotely hijacked are just to scare people into updating Windows.

I kind of agree here. Fully agree actually but whatever.
Don't want to push on anti-W7 collective knowledge assessment,
but he has a great point for this thread. No need to update.

Default Octobers update KB 4462923 needs to be downloaded manually

Microsoft playing its usual game of kick them W7 users

I meant encourage those W7 users to move to W10 or else

What happened to KB 4462923, the October Win7 Monthly Rollup?

You can download and install it manually, but in our tests the Win7 October Monthly Rollup is hard to find through Windows Update — and it won’t install automatically. Why?

https://www.computerworld.com/articl...ly-rollup.html

Not forgetting for the above to work you need to have a previous KB 317746 already installed otherwise it wont

Default Google reveals Chrome zero-day under active attacks

On Wednesday, February 27th, we reported two 0-day vulnerabilities — previously publicly-unknown vulnerabilities — one affecting Google Chrome and another in Microsoft Windows that were being exploited together.

To remediate the Chrome vulnerability (CVE-2019-5786), Google released an update for all Chrome platforms on March 1; this update was pushed through Chrome auto-update. We encourage users to verify that Chrome auto-update has already updated Chrome to 72.0.3626.121 or later.

The second vulnerability was in Microsoft Windows. It is a local privilege escalation in the Windows win32k.sys kernel driver that can be used as a security sandbox escape. The vulnerability is a NULL pointer dereference in win32k!MNGetpItemFromIndexwhen NtUserMNDragOver() system call is called under specific circumstances.

We strongly believe this vulnerability may only be exploitable on Windows 7 due to recent exploit mitigations added in newer versions of Windows.

To date, we have only observed active exploitation against Windows 7 32-bit systems.

Pursuant to Google’s vulnerability disclosure policy, when we discovered the vulnerability we reported it to Microsoft. Today, also in compliance with our policy, we are publicly disclosing its existence, because it is a serious vulnerability in Windows that we know was being actively exploited in targeted attacks. The unpatched Windows vulnerability can still be used to elevate privileges or combined with another browser vulnerability to evade security sandboxes. Microsoft have told us they are working on a fix.

Default Widespread reports of freezing with yesterday’s Win7 KB 4493472

Appears to be anti-virus related

I've updated KB 4493472 and am running avast free - no issues - but others

Windows machines (particularly those running Windows 7) are becoming locked or frozen on startup after Microsoft updates KB4493472, KB4493448, and KB4493435.

Avast has received reports of an issue affecting our customers running Avast for Business and Avast Cloud Care on Windows machines, particularly those with Windows 7 operating systems.

While this problem is currently being researched, we have discovered some temporary solutions to restore functionality to our users.

Reboot your machine into Safe Mode. Our customers are reporting that they are able to get past the login/Welcome screen in Safe Mode.

I'm a computer professional. I've been doing it since 1994, and seen every flavor of Windows come and go. With that said, my personal machines run W7 (a few have W10 in a dual boot but I never use it, it's just there for work when I need to walk someone through something).

Windows 10, is shit.

I use to pride myself on the fact I "never lost a patient" in 20+ years of doing this. W10 comes along, and they drop like flies... no repair possible, Must wipe out and start over.

I have always hated everything to do with Apple, but there's a very good chance I may convert if/when the force me to abandon W7. Windows 10 is just not a viable option as an everyday platform. The updates are russian roulette. The GUI is a POS.

I still run W7 on a computer I bought about 7 years ago. That's by far the longest I have gone without buying a new computer or OS since I started in computers back in the early 90s. Only thing I've done is maxed out the RAM the rig will take, and added a new video card...other than that, it's unchanged in 7 years. W7 does what I need/want done, the computer does what I need/want done...no need to change just for the sake of changing.

The only "change" I made to W7 was to install Classic Start Menu to make the GUI look like the old style W95 GUI. I hated the flying windows, or whatever the heck it was called...the GUI that looked like phone apps. I couldn't find anything, so I hunted around and found a program that would make the GUI old style.

Somewhere along the way I did buy a convertible laptop that had W8 on it. I ended up giving that thing away to somebody because I disliked W8 that much. I spent days deleting bloatware apps off of that thing when I first bought it. If W10 is anything like W8, you can keep it.

Win7 still works on my desktop (mainly because of games). Linux Mint runs on my laptop. Sooner or later I'll completely switch to Linux.
