Favorite Game Show
NOTE - I did a search here at VEF for any topic or thread about this subject and found nothing. I could have overlooked it and if I did I apologize in advance. The mods know what to do then.
Game shows, mostly aired in the morning hours before reality and talk TV shows took over, were a favorite of mine. It's a bit sad that most of those classics are gone and regulated to the dustbin of history. What I'd like to ask everyone here, what was your favorite one(s) ? I do know that we have a fair number of members from other nations, especially the UK and the shows that aired there are different from those her in the states. But we've must have at least one or two that stick in our minds. Since I am starting this thread, I list one of my faves right off and that is a 1970's classic, Match Game. I won't go into a full description of how the game was played, but if anyone is interested I refer to this article at Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Match_Game I know that the cable network GSN sometimes airs reruns of the 1973-1979 run of the show from time to time and they are worth checking out. So, there's one of mine, how about yours ? Ghaleon |

As mentioned in the Wiki link, that one was called "Blankety Blank" in the UK, and it ran for 17 series.
Personally, I always found it to be a bit too contrived, but as with a lot of these shows, my enjoyment usually depended on (i) the host, and (ii) the celebrities involved. Taking the term "game show" in it's broadest sense, my favourite would be the radio panel-game "I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue" ... and believe me, it would take too long to explain it if you're not familiar with the show! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I%27m_S...ven%27t_a_Clue The most baffling game show ever was "3-2-1" ... for the simple reason that whoever wrote the clues must have been sniffing solvents! They were impossible to figure out! In fact, they were so vague that I'm convinced you could have the same clue for the top prize or the "booby prize" (a brand new dustbin)! |

I was gripped by the 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire' bug like the rest of the UK when it first started. Now perennial favourites are Have I Got News For You and QI. I suppose they are 'pannel' shows rather than 'game' shows maybe.

Two are tied for my favorite: "Win Ben Stein's Money", and "Jeopardy!"
Ben Stein's show was funny, and it was also a real contest, without all of the nonsense of "Millionaire", including lifelines and other aids. Contestants either knew the answers, or they didn't. And for "Jeopardy!", it's not the current version of the show, but the original from the late 60s and early 70s, hosted by Art Fleming. In that incarnation, the questions were harder and the judging standards were tougher. The new version, hosted by Alex Trebek, allows responses that the old show never would (like accepting "Russia" for "Soviet Union"). Still, even the watered-down version is better than just about any other game show out there today.

I too like Jeopardy! in both the current and classic runs. I also don't think the material is any different as far as how tough or easy it is. I also have to disagree with the fact the judges are more lenient. In some shows I've seen them rule against a contestant for even misspelling or mispronouncing a word.
As to some of the other shows mentioned here, I cannot say that I've heard of them but will learn more about them as I intend to look them up on the net. Ghaleon |
