Love this thread and to all all our friends across several ponds I have some replies from the Colonies:

1. Soda: In Texas, where I was born and raised, if you wished for a "carbonated beverage" you asked for a "coke" and were given a "Dr. Pepper", state drink of Texas. Serious. I never drank a Coca Cola until I left the state for College. And Lone Star Beer is not the beer of Texas. I know of no one that drinks it. Cheap beer.
2. Accents and Dialects: When I was 6 years old I decided I did not wish to "drawl" nor speak with a "southern dialect", so I consciously imitated the newscasters on the national TV networks. It is a neutral mid-western accent that is difficult to narrow. Helped me immensely in job opportunities all over the world.
3. NFL Season: I played since I was 6 years old and after 11 seasons, I regret every minute of the experience (except for the girls) as I have busted knees, chronic back pain, broken bones everywhere and it hurts to get up every morning. I played baseball too and could play an entire 60 game season and not one injury. One game of football on Friday or Saturday? Doctor on Monday. Very, very violent sport. Respect anyone that could survive one Sunday in the NFL.
4. World Series: My father, who hated baseball, made the same argument about the name of the baseball championship. That being said, I am wearing my 2007 World Series Rockies T-shirt. Love baseball; hate football.
5. Pulled Pork: Barbeque varies all over the US. In Dallas, it's beef; in North Texas and most of the south it's pork. They are both good but the best I have experienced is the pork ribs in Memphis, home of Elvis. Also, the portions at most restaurants are so large, IMHO, is due to you aren't buying one meal. You take the leftovers home and have two or maybe three meals.

Just adding my "two cents" to the conversation. As for my cousins across the pond, thank you for "Monty Python", "Black Adder" and all my beloved comedies. And Kenneth Branagh. Oh, and my Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather who, in the immortal words of Steven Colbert, "did not cross 3,000 miles of Ocean to see America taken over by immigrants."
We do love you guys.

Barndude... excellent post. I was born in California, but moved to Indiana when just a small lad. I eventually moved back to California and had to ditch the country accent. I still sometimes catch myself saying "crick" instead of creek or "warsh" instead of wash. Lol.

With regards to censorship in the good ol' US of A, it is rather ridiculous. The Puritan blood still flows in our veins, it would seem. I personally find it odd that we allow graphic depictions of unspeakable violence to be broadcast over our freedom loving airwaves and yet the mere hint of a nipple brings out the religious zealots and family values types. We definitely are an odd group over here. Cheers!

Thanks for the nice comments. I too think it beyond the pale that violence is the norm yet sex or language is considered taboo. I think the network showing of "Snakes on a Plane" is the funniest example yet:
Samuel L. Jackson: "I want these 'Monkey Fighting' snakes off this 'Monday to Friday' plane!". A friend sent me that video and I cracked up having seen the film in theaters.
Oh, one thing someone mentioned in private. Yes, all people in Texas own a gun. Yes, metaphorically speaking, they do as there are 57 million registered guns and only 20 million residents. I owned one at 8 years old, a .22 rifle, and gradually moved up to shotguns and pistols. Then I went into the army and was an M-60 gunner. That did it for me.
Haven't owned a firearm in 20 years. I prefer Stetson hats for sun protection and a nice Nikon camera. That's the way to shoot wildlife.

My favourite swearing dub is maggot farmer instead of mother fucker. Forgotten the movie, but Mel Gibson was the guy saying it

Sitting on my cold, rainy Island on the northern tip of Europe, when someone like Andie Macdowell or Sela Ward appears on a US talk show, my ears perk up and I eagerly allow that southern accent to manipulate me like an erotic massage.

Default Slightly off topic but a rant against censorship!

The worst one for me is in Crocodile Dundee where he punches the guy and says "how should I know shit for brains" then later in the movie "you can eat it, but it tastes like shit".

A few years ago the word shit was changed to 'dung', but the film was repeated recently and those whole scenes were cut!

Ruined the whole film. I can be my own censor thank you. With the on/off switch!

At one time they used to censor part of the Who's movie Quadrophenia on UK TV. The bit were Jimmy shags Steph in the alleyway. You don't see anything, but Mary Whitehouse must have been upset

Here in Australia one of the most common pizzas is the Hawaiian that has ham and pineapple on it. Any Hawaiians here verify the pizza named after them contains ham and pineapple?
I think my wife said in Brazil pineapple on pizzas is not common as well.
Sure we do. Usually it's a white pizza (no sauce) with ham or Canadian bacon and pineapple chunks. One of my favorites.

My local pizza takeaway does pineapple. I've had it in Germany and Italy too. Nice with tuna!
