What that boils down to is that the God of infinite love and compassion insisted that His only Son die a hideous death to satisfy a rule that He Himself created.

Because you're trying to apply logic to faith. Faith does not work like that, faith is about belief. And that's fine, you don't believe, but is that a reason to put down anyone that does?
