You´ve beaten me to it...I was just experiencing this new option too and was deciding to post.

I am still wondering why they have switched to the same sort of download-tool like Rapidgator did several weeks back.

At least there is an option to disable it and to go for regular downloading without installing an .exe-file.

Thanks for your head´s up!

I'd noticed this 'download manager' too but cancelled when i spotted it was an exe file. Thankfully it allowed an uncheck of the box & thought there may have been a wait, but how long is that option going to be there and are more hosts going to do this?

I hope not

I found malware in a Rapidgator exe. so I don't like this move

something seems to have changed with the file that comes to your computer if you leave their "Download Manager" option checked, and it's a bit of a devious one.

It's still an exe. file , but it is suffixed with ,
.zip.exe

This makes it appear to be a zip file when you look in your folder (as the .exe doesn't show) Uncheck the Download Manager if you use FF

Since I use FF exclusively, I decided it would be best to just find out exactly
what that mysterious "exe" file is. After signing out of my FF premium account,
I was then able to then see the checked box, and proceeded to download
the the "exe" file. During, and after the download, my malware and virus
protection programs stayed silent. I ran a check on the "exe" file on it's own,
and once again nothing. As was stated above, the file downloaded, takes
on the name of the file that you were trying to download in the first place,
except now ending with dot exe. Double clicking the file, commences the
so called install, which during, and upon completion, never once alerted
either my my malware or virus programs. Turns out it is a download accelerator.
Which of course would be worthless as a free downloader, because of the
speed restrictions that are placed on all non premium downloaders. So.....
no help whatsoever at all.

What I did find out, is that this "program", or
"exe" file, doesn't really install. It's a "standalone", and is used once for
the file that you are downloading. If it turns out that for some reason you
actually liked this thing, you'll have to download it again for the next FF
file that you might download as a free user......hence the taking on the name
of the file to distinguish it from any other individual download.

So.....in
conclusion, I found this little opt out/in check box, to be nothing other
than a way for FF to gain some advertising money from the sonzabitches
that invented it, with no viruses or malware, but a spooky experience as
it is any time when confronted with downloading an unexpected "exe" file.
I wrote FF demanding an explanation, and was told that this was a "temporary
experiment", which may or may not be left in place, depending on it's
success or not. I replied to them that a similar "experiment" by Rapidgator,
found their services banned in a great many forums where their links were
found, and that any money gained from this "experiment", could very well
be offset to the negative, from losses similar to RG.

I can't really say one way or the other how long this "thing" will stay on
the downloads from free users. Hopefully they'll take my advice though,
because even though apparently harmless, it no doubt puts a scare into
downloaders that is totally unnecessary or deserved. If they want to make
more money, then keep up their good services, then raises their premium
service prices. The better the service, the more users they'll gain, and
in the end, companies that make usesless crap, whose only purpose is
to bring in money, won't be looked into, temporarily or at all.

Why would you be changing back and forth between browsers? The box
is easier to uncheck than it is to change browsers isn't it?

Default no check box with IE8

I also do not get the check box when using IE8, so there is no way to uncheck it so that you can get the actual file to download.

Problem solved by using Chrome, check box is present, uncheck it and the file is made available for download. Thanks for the tip bpotec.

Isn't this EXE simply a self-extracting archive file for those who are too challenged to use archiving/packing software?
