On 31 october 1983, in Washington, American and worldwide scientists (even Soviets one thanks a satellite-video debate) demonstrated that a conflict of 100 Mt (1000 cities bombed by 0,1 tons nuclear bombs) would destroy life on Earth.

In 2016 USA still get 4018 nuclear bombs for about 500 Mt!!!!!!!
That's without Russia, Pakistan, India, France, UK, China...

We still have on Earth, in hand of potential crazy politicians and military people, tools that could destroy the humanity in at least 6 monthes because of the consequence of a nuclear winter.
In February 1984, Pr H.A. Simon of the Carnegie University explained that the next country that would use the nuclear bomb on Earth in military view, would surely destroy its own population.
And in 2018, we learned that military and politician clowns who get the nuclear bombs are absolutely not thinking to desactivate ALL their bombs.
That's pathetic.

Personally I don't think that there ever will be a World War where nuclear weapons will be used. Why would an enemy want to rule over a nation where the inhabited surface is contaminated with nuclear fallout for thousands of years. Instead I believe the world might be destroyed by a supervirus accidently un-leashed by a secret government lab, like that Stephen King novel "The Stand"

I wish I could agree with you, but as various nuclear arsenals continue to increase, resources diminish and lunatics take positions of power, there is an ever increasing chance of a an unstoppable cascade of events starting. There have already been some very close calls. Operation Able Archer almost started WW3 in 1983 and since then there have been situations like the Pakistan-India face off with both countries prepared to use nukes. Then you have Israel and Iran and let's not forget Kimmie. The world is now a very dangerous place and that is why the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists have just re-set their doomsday clock to two minutes midnight.

You can find it here - serious stuff: https://thebulletin.org/

BTW, most nuclear fusion weapons are understood to be relatively clean in comparison to the early devices and the contamination will not last for thousands of years. Changes to the global climate are likely to be the most serious challenge for anyone surviving a thermonuclear war.

However, I am inclined to agree with Trailmaster that the chances of a deadly plague being released accidently, on purpose or naturally occurring is a very real possibility and should this happen, it could make Spanish Flu seem to have been little more than the common cold in comparison and bring everything to a dramatic halt around the world.

Apparently, the UK PM wants a "security deal" after UK leaves the EU, seemingly unaware that Europe doesn't need Britain's military and gets nearly all intelligence requirements from its own sources

Which leaves police & legal co-operation. What is their attitude to the Anti Tax-Avoidance Directive, which also covers money-laundering, and do they know it will affect them in various ways whether they leave the EU or not?

This must be why the heads of the French and of the German intelligence services issued a joint statement with the head of Britain's MI6 this week stressing the importance of continued mutual cooperation.

It doesn't seem to be part of US defense and diplomatic policy to build ICBM facilities outside of the continental US. Shorter range mobile missiles maybe. I'm not even sure if we base nuclear warheads for aircraft or air-launched cruise missiles outside US territory anymore.

I played there with a band in the mid 70's . You could buy American stuff in the PX.

It was closed after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War - a disaster for the people of Dunoon as well as for those poor Russkis.
