Saddened to hear of the passing of Michael Bond, I remember reading the Paddington books when I was younger and he was also responsible for The Herbs as well. I loved the television series made by Film Fair and Ivor Wood and I have some old Blue Peter annuals and some of the stories were later with Paddidngton and his relationship with Blue Peter, especially written by Bond for the BBC. I saw the film version which wasn't bad ( Bond has a very quick cameo in it)but the animation was better. When the BBC made a special called Paddington At the Movies it featured a sequence of Paddington dancing to Singing in the Rain, made famous by Gene Kelly. They had to get permission from Kelly(who at the time was still alive) and he loved it and gave his blessing.

Don't fret, my seven year old granddaughter, her mum and her aunty have got that covered. I'm pretty sure that between them, they have all the stuffed teddy bears that ever there was.

Dave Semenko July 12, 1957 – June 29, 2017
Former Oiler Semenko passes at 59
Two-time Stanley Cup champion Dave Semenko passed away on Thursday at the age of 59 after a battle with cancer. "It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Oilers legend Dave Semenko after a short, but courageous battle with cancer," the Edmonton Oilers said in a statement. "Dave will be remembered as a fierce competitor, loyal teammate, fan favourite and dear friend to so many. His legendary toughness on the ice is surpassed only by his kindness and caring for others, and his equally legendary wit and sense of humour. "Our hearts go out to Dave's family and many friends. Once an Oiler, Always an Oiler source

Phil Cohran May 8, 1927 – June 28, 2017
Jazz musician Kelan Phil Cohran has died, as the Chicago Tribune reports. The trumpeter, bandleader, and composer who founded the Artistic Heritage Ensemble with Pete Cosey was 90 years old. After playing in a military band as a young musician, his career as a professional musician took off in earnest once he began performing with Sun Ra and His Arkestra, with whom he played trumpet from 1959-1961. Cohran’s work with the Arkestra was recorded on several albums, including Fate in a Pleasant Mood and Angels and Demons at Play. In late 1960s, Cohran co-founded the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) and opened the Afro-Arts Theater in Chicago. Known for his work as an educator, one of Cohran’s students was a young Maurice White; members of the Artistic Heritage Ensemble went on to perform in Earth, Wind, and Fire as well. Cohran continued to record and release music, most recently recording with the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble (a group consisting of his eight sons).

Mitchell Henry December 11, 1992 – June 30, 2017
Former NFL tight end Mitchell Henry died Friday of complications from acute myeloid leukemia. He was 24.
"It is with great sadness that we learned of Mitchell's passing this morning," Western Kentucky athletic director Todd Stewart said in a statement. "Mitchell was as committed to his teammates, his University, his friends and his family as anyone you will ever find, and we were so fortunate to have him as part of our Hilltopper family. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, his lovely wife Madison, and all of those who were blessed to have known Mitchell." source

The passing of Mrs Simone Veil
I am sad to announce the death of Mrs Simone Veil this morning.
She was the French Minister for enacting the law enabling the I.V.G. She was the first President of the European Parliament She was a member of the Immortals, the members of the Academie Française. She also was a strong advocate for the reconciliation wiyh the German people (yet she lost a part of her family in the German death camps; she herself was a survivor at Auschwitz). She was a strong woman and a beautiful one. She died aged 89 going on 90. R.I.P. |
