^^ Isn't the 'soft' dismissal akin to the rugby ref asking the tmo if there is any reason why I can not award a try ?

Or in this case "Is there, in your judgement, any reason why the batsman can not be given out"

The problem is that there is never a satisfactory camera angle and they often go 50/50.

Maxwell got a break but England really do need to look in the mirror since this gung-ho attitude could cost then dearly when it really matters.

Just to show its a lottery

The 50/50 Steve Smith dismissal

Only difference , one Umpire said not out the other out

I'd start using the time wasting technology as nothing more than an umpires helper
No referrals for teams

Its useful in other sports like tennis because the area is small

Cricket ovals by comparison are huge with obstructed/inconclusive views
always a possibility

If the standing umpire is unsure on whether there is an edge or with an lbw decision, he will always give not out even if it is obvious to the fielding team. Similarly the umpire can give an out decision even when the batsman is sure he is not out.
We have all seen such umpire's decisions overturned. So I agree with the limited referrals.
A bit different with catches. Depending on the length of grass in the outfield, a "catch" can often touch a few blades of grass. I would say leave such decisions to the on-field umpires.

Bang bang Maxwell's silver hammer came down upon his head.

I seem to remember when the picture quiz was introduced someone did a video of showing a catch in the grass and although it looked like a catch it had been set up so the ball was downed, but in slow mo it looked like the fielder had got his hands under the ball.
If your unsure stay with the decision on the field.
Food for thought.

International ODIs & T20 rate as highly as watching grass grow
except when its the WC or Champions Trophy and it means more than

Not to worry. The beak has granted 'Rocky' unconditional bail and will land in Kiwi country any day soon.
