Yup what has love got to do with religion, get rid of all variants of fun and lets all be morose humourless drones.

"Valentine's Day has no legal grounds, and secondly it is against our religion, therefore it was banned."

Yes it has no legal grounds, who ever said it did? It's a purely Christian construct to celebrate love and it has become over commercialised however that does not make it bad; the thought behind it is reasonable enough. It has nothing to do with Islam or any faith even non believers send cards it's just tradition. How is it against Islam exactly?

I can understand some Hindu's not liking it as they have a long tradition of arranged marriages so meeting a stranger by chance and falling in love is an alien concept for them.

I think this is just a smoke and mirrors political gimmick for a politician trying to score cheap points. Burning Valentine's Day ephemera is childish in the extreme.
I noted in the news that everyone in Pakistan appears to be completely ignoring the ban, including the police.

Several million brownie points to my Dad for buying my Mum flowers two days ago but to be honest outside of that I can't see the point of St Valentine's Day. Why wait a whole year to tell someone you love them and it's a bit like Christmas and Easter - too commercialised. I've only ever had ONE card and that was a set-up by my sister when I was younger but I feel there is too much pressure placed on men to remember this pointless day - unless you're a hopeless romantic of course!

Everyone loves their muvvas!

In a cupboard downstairs under my stairs there is at the back of it, underneath a load of boxes full of Passover stuff that gets pulled out once a year, is a huge Valentine card that my sister received many years ago from an old boyfriend. These were the days when they were the size of a small house - thankfully for postmen today those sort of cards are history(at least I've not seen that sort for years) but it is noticeable for Valentine's Day now that there is some sort of traditional package given to your girlfriend, wife or mistress - a card, chocolates, something fizzy and a jewellery item (especially if you're getting married, engaged or just want to be really extravagant or you have something to be embarrassed about) Still a waste of time and money though.

Just watched some of the BAFTAs and as usual, this disgusting sycophanic, back-slapping event with its vomit worthy speeches, soon encouraged me to put on a movie I'd been waiting to see. Do people really enjoy programmes like this?

How is it against Islam exactly?
It's Shirk, the primary sin in Islam, the sin of combining the worship of their god Allah with the worship or deification of another entity, in this case the Christian saint Valentine.

If a muslim commits Shirk and dies without renouncing it, it is the one sin that won't be forgiven by Allah. The Koran prescribes death for Mushrikoun, "Polytheists/Idolators" in Surah 9, Verse 5 "ayat as-sayf" (the Sword Verse), the verse that cancels and supersedes every tolerant verse of the Koran.

So the President of Pakistan plus all the other Muslim authorities from Iran to Indonesia who have condemned and banned Valentine's Day over the decades are islamically correct and the Muslims who celebrate Valentines are being bad Muslims but good human beings.

A young mum I work with sent her daughter a valentines and said I should do the same for mine, and for those who remember the thread, to the smelly bundle too. He by the way is a hulking three plus now. I thought that probably was not a great idea, a bit odd imho.

That said, no valentines for me this year, and what the hell a bit of romance hurts no one! As for Pakistan and their banning it, same the whole world over the President/Prime minister says something for the press and the whole nation just goes 'yeah bollocks!'

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't St Valentine's Day used to be mostly a day for secret admirers to express their affections openly with cards and gifts, rather than for established couples to celebrate? I don't remember the "couples" side of it being such a big thing until about 20 years ago.

Or am I going daft in my late middle age?
