She is a great athlete. Didn't the great Sergey Bubka help coach her at some point ?

Russia was in the doldrums sporting wise for a number of years in the collapse of Communism but with increased funding over recent years and restoration of some of the sporting programmes and facilities results are slowly returning to what they were prior to 1990.

Some of the coaches who left in the mass exodus in the nineties helping other countries to close the gap on Russia in several sports have returned too.

The youth are performing well again in basketball, volleyball, handball, ice hockey, chess, ice skating and gymnastics.

And several other sports are getting more funds. The rugby union project is an intriguing one. Prince Obolensky is one famous Russian rugby player who turned out for England. Rugby was not liked in Russia in the period of Stalinism for it's supposedly elitist roots and promotion of violence.....

But after the Soviet Union turned out several very decent players in the eighties it declined again with a lack of funds. Recently with oligarch funding it is resurgent.

Several players are now here in England and more children are playing the sport and clubs opening up across Russia.

It has a very bright future in Russia. F1 is also a new sport that is taking hold over there with the launch of the Russian Grand Prix in 2014 at the Winter Olympic venue of Sochi.

Other sports such as cycling still need time to re-establish themselves along with rowing.

And in the long run much of the funding is provided by oligarchs. Which is a rather precarious situation.

Many large towns still lack the facilities they used to have in the form of sports palaces and sports education in schools which is yet to be rectified.

Not to mention the endemic problems of alcoholism and smoking which contribute to a rather below average life expectancy for many are still to be tackled.

Some do. I've seen former ballerinas of the Kirov who then returned to training the next generation balloon while others like the late lamented Natalia Dudinskaya who can count Uliana Lopatkina as her last 'great' pupil remained fit as a fiddle.
