Ideologically, I'm opposed to this type of behavior from an NFL player. Yes, he's probably the best cornerback in the entire league. But, he just got his contract & now he's trying to get paid much more than what he originally signed for.

The flip side to that idea however, is that the Jets could have ripped up that same contract if his level of play didn't live up to the money that they signed him for.

I don't feel bad for this guy at all. He makes much more money than I do. There's something to be said for a man honoring his contract. But, this NFL created this Frankenstein with the hard salary cap. The only guaranteed money is with the signing bonus. This definitely needs to be fixed with the next CBA.
You make some great points. This is the double edged sword that the NFL has created. The case with Revis to me is particularily interesting. As Q pointed out earlier, he held out his rookie year to get a more long term contract than a typical rookie deal which are usually 5 years. Revis signed for six. He wants to be paid the highest salary in the league for a CB which is $15 mil a year for the guy in Oakland. I can't even begin to try and spell his name. Oakland CB got his contract when he was a free agent. This is a completely different situation. There is no one bidding for his services.

Revis, by missing training camp, has in effect waived $20 million that was due to him in the last two years of the contract as stipulated by the contract he signed. The man is taking a considerable personal risk if he continues to do this. I'm not saying it's right or wrong but he is willing to put his a** on the line for what he believes in. As G pointed out, when people say he should honor his contract because that's the "right" thing to do, that kind of attitude doesn't exist on either side of the relationship. Teams end contracts at any time that they choose, no questions asked. The guys cut and his contract is voided. Revis is in a position currently, apart from free agency, where he has some leverage. He is a great player. The team needs him. They probably realize he has "outperformed" his contract. They have high expectations and are starting to become a "glamour" team which hasn't been the case with the Jets since maybe Joe Namath. Revis knows all this and may think that now is the time to push so to speak.

Now with all that being said, IMO both sides need to look at how Chris Johnson and Titans handled it. No question that CJ outperformed his contract and he threatened to hold out. Titans met with him and they tore up the last two years of his contract, gave him a huge raise but not one that is equal to the highest paid players at RB, and he agreed. That is what I think the Jets and Revis should try and do. If Revis continues to demand to make 15 mil a year than if I'm the Jets, I play hard ball and let him hold out. If the Jets say F.U. we have a signed contract from you, it's hard to deny them that right. The man did sign a contract asking for an extra year. And held out to get it. Hard to have much sympathy for Revis in this situation. For the good of everyone including the team and fans, they should try and find a suitable medium. But if they can't, I side with the Jets.

I'm not too sure about Chris Johnson in Tenn. I think they just moved some escalators forward (which he was going to earn anyways). I could be wrong but have a read:

http://www.tennessean.com/article/20.../2161/sports01

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...with-contract/

I agree with you: Nnamdi Assamougha (sp? ) got his extension as a free agent and these guys want the teams to tear up their rookie contracts. Not gonna happen...

BUT

One thing I'd like to bring to light:

When the NFLPA was negotiating a CBA, they TRADED guaranteed contracts for bigger money...you can't cry about something you bargained for. You have guys like Haynesworth, Nnamdi, Julius Peppers (didn't he make $20 million last year - franchise tag 2 years in a row) because they wanted this big dollar NOW contracts (which fits the mentality, dontcha think? ) instead of smaller contracts, guaranteed.

If the NBAPA, MLBPA, and NHLPA's lawyers can negotiate guarantees...the NFLPA can, as well. But it was traded away...

I guess what is going on now is a tit for tat trade off with DeMaurice Smith and Goodell. What they should really do is tear up the old one and start fresh, with:

Line One: Rookie Salary Cap

Line Two: Guaranteed contracts with smaller salaries

Line Three: Defined conduct policy

But I guess that's too common sense, huh?

In case you guys weren't aware, there's a very interesting ongoing story on ESPN.

You guys probably already know that Albert Haynesworth reported to camp & promptly failed Mike Shanahan's conditioning drill. So, the media decides to debate whether the test was unreasonable or not. Some considered it punishment dealt out by Shanahan toward Haynesworth.

So, Mike Golic (Mike #2 from Mike & Mike in the Morning) takes to the airwaves yesterday & says that it's completely ridiculous that Haynesworth can't pass the test. He said it wasn't very hard at all & in fact it was harder back in the '80's when he was playing. But, (& this is why I respect Golic so much) he didn't end it there. He decided to get a camera crew down to what looked like a high school field & take the test himself. Although even I was skeptical he could pass the test (he's been retired for about 15 years), he proved any doubters wrong & passed it. He had no preparation or training for this exercise either.

Here's the video clip:

So, my question is should Albert Haynesworth feel ashamed that a 40 year old man who's been retired for 15 years is in better shape than the man currently playing in the NFL?

I'd say it's one of many things Albert Haynesworth should be ashamed of.

Wow - I can't believe it.

Funny thing is, there are other players who are coming out saying "I couldn't do that test" blah blah blah...smaller position players...talk about protecting the shield!!

That's what I hate about sports today; everyone acts like a jailhouse lawyer...even when it is blatantly obvious of what the truth is...

Fat Albert is certainly a baby, but Snyder and the Redskins are getting what they deserve...after throwing that kind of money at him.

I remember when Jeff Wright signed a contract with the Bills in the early 90's. It was a multi-million dollar deal, nothing to compare with the mega-deals of today, but good money for the day. Jeff was asked if he was worth that kind of money and he said no. Nobody did anything truly worth that kind of money. But given the circumstances of his job, he said he was worth that kind of money.

Just to add to that:

One of the female sideline reporters ran his test recently. Past the first but missed the second part by 8 seconds...and she said she hadn't eaten and wasn't ready.

8 seconds!

Fat Albert...what a joke.

Default Been awhile...

...and there's so much to talk about!

Up first; Darelle Revis.

Looks like he's going to hold out for 2010. Apparently since he is under contract and he (as of today) has lost a years service. If he doesn't play in 2010, and they lockout 2011, I hope he has saved his pennies!

What say you?

Shaq!

Has signed with the Boston Celtics - Rasheed Wallace has retired. Shaq wants to win 6 titles, play on teams, in 20 years. How satisfying will it be if he can beat out Wade and LeBaby!

Brett Favre.

Is he coming back?

So much to talk about...so little time.

Revis thinks he's in a position of power, when the longer he holds out, the weaker he becomes. Playing and continuing to prove he's worth the money makes the player's stance stronger.

Good for Shaq. If he wants to keep playing and is willing to accept a lesser role, go for it. Bill Walton did the same thing. Yeah, Shaq did say he wanted to be retired by now a long time ago, but it was a long time ago.

And Brett Favre? I just don't care. I'm not a Vikings fan and after 9 off-seasons of this, even Hamlet is saying shit or get off the pot.
