Default The decline of western civilization, con't...

We all know them. Since 1969, they've been a staple of children's television.

According to the UK Sun, one of the writers has come out and admitted that Burt and Ernie are gay.

Mark Saltzman, writer for the show since 1984, revealed that he did indeed write them as a gay couple as the characters reflected his own same-sex relationship. He claims to not having an agenda, but writing them as a gay couple was his only way to contextualise them. He thought it was 'fun' when he once heard a PRESCHOOLER ask her mum if they were lovers.

The Sesame Workshop was quick to contradict this claim stating the pair were created to "teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves". As the pair were created 15 years before this writer came along, they may be right. 1969 was a totally different world.

Folks, they're puppets. They're cloth figures with someone's hand up their arse. How can they possibly have a sexual orientation? Not to mention the fact that this writer feels no qualms about pushing sexuality in any form on five year old kids, even tho he claims to not having an agenda.

ffs.

Oh, come on, don't tell me you never suspected.

FYI, Oscar the Grouch represents the homeless dude who goes through the garbage cans in your alley. He's got irrefutable proof that Bert and Ernie are gay, if you can stand to look at it.

Plato's dialogues are filled with references to homosexual relationships. Homosexuality was openly practiced in the Roman Republic and Empire. Even the gospels can be interpreted to say that Jesus and John the Apostle were lovers. Many of the great figures of western civilization have been queer.

In my pre-puberty school days, we were all aware that some of the boys were different without knowing the cause. As we awakened sexually, it became clear what that was. Some of the guys abused and bullied the nascent queens. It was only in adulthood that I became aware that some of the macho types preferred getting it on with guys, and other guys were switch hitters.

Most of us are straight, but homosexuals are found in a variety of species. We don't know Nature's purpose for this, but presumably God has his or her reasons. When the Master enjoined us to love our neighbors, He did not carve out exceptions. He also didn't tell us that meant we must suck each other's dicks and open our arses wide.

I am and old man and confess that there is much I don't understand. "Live and let live" is an ancient and sound mantra.

Unlike snowflakes, who insist on getting hysterical over the slightest perceived insult and go into a meltdown when any of the "patriarchal privileged class" take issue with their overwrought foolishness.

It's hard to find common ground and have a civilized discourse with those who have already walked far up Nutter's Lane.

Thus, we have this thread, in which we comment on this aspect of a society gone all rotten and soft in the middle, to say nothing of downright bonkers.

Playing cards are racist too. A whole suite of spades?

Rather ironic given the contents of this thread. The most hysterical people are the utlra right wing/religious who always seem to be permanently raging about something or other, mostly stuff that never affects them directly.

Raging about political correctness is basically a demand to continue excluding, insulting or marginalizing human beings for the sole reason that they're different. Is there a more childish, anti-freedom outlook than that?

If you believe in freedom then start showing it by allowing people to be who they want to be, that is their freedom isn't it? Trying to turn this into anti-freedom of speech is a right-wing ploy. If people attack someone's lifestyle choice then they attack freedom itself.

The initial 'anti-freedom' is someone putting down someone elses free life choice. The irony is when the person doing the putting down cries anti-freedom of speech when it's pointed out that it's got nothing to do with them.

But it's always the same people attacking individual freedom - the religious conservatives who are angry at the fact that their religion can no longer force the entire population to follow that religions tennets.

It's just the way religion has to work to thrive. It has to marginalise non-believers and non-conformists in order to have critical mass of followers so all the next generation sees is wall to wall religious adherents and the example of what happens to those who don't toe the line.

Once relgion loses that critical mass of believers, more and more people stop following it. Most people are a bit sheep like, they'll do whatever to fit in so when everyone is of a religion, the social pressure to conform is overwhelming. The relgion inserts itself into all aspects of life from cradle to the grave to maintain it's power and influence.
Being hard core on non-believers is part of that, throughout history and the hangover of that is still there in todays conservatives. It's handed down from parent to child. Attack the non-believers, attack the non-conformist, attack those that are different.

They attack the 'different' because they fear it.

Once a religions grip on society starts to be eroded, people drift away and they finally enjoy the true freedom to decide their own way and they want to be free to live their lives without having to put up with the whining and bitching a section of society feel they're historically entitled to indulge in.

Ultimately you've got one life, your own and no one elses is any business of yours.

I don't think that homosexuality is anything but an error in biological programming. Flesh is far from perfect, if that were not the case than no one would be wearing eyeglasses or getting braces for their teeth.

Its a pretty harmless error too, much better than being born blind or missing an arm or a leg, or with diabetes. From nature's point of view, it means that person who is homosexual is much less likely to mate and produce offspring, so it is bad for propagating the species as a whole, but there are plenty of heterosexual people who don't do that either, so what the hell.

How is following along in the PC herd any different than following a religion? Both expect me to believe in certain things, avoid saying certain words, and punishment/excommunication will follow if I do not obey.

I insist on controlling my own mind. I will think what I wish to think. Some of what I think may offend you. That is too bad. But I am no more on the side of the religious conservatives than I am on the side of the social justice warriors.

Speaking for myself, I'm a bit old fashioned with many things, I vote left and right, I'm open to most things, have been to gay cafe's, have life long friends of many different backgrounds and races and a few religions and have a lot of tolerance, what I hate about the PC crap is forcing issues with idiotic crap ... I started this thread for the reason, illogical thought process in much of their things ... I mean one of my early ones I posted that stick in my mind on this thread was a green politician here pushing gender neutral toys for kids What the hell that has to do with Green issues escapes me, I could go to why Qantas employees were almost forced to wear rings in support of gay marriage that has noting to do with Qantas and it's employees work day escapes me. I could go on and on.

I never heard that story, what the hell?

I don't care if gay people get married, but as an employee of company X, why should I be forced to wear a ring to support an issue that has nothing to do with me?

Companies have absolutely no business forcing shit like that on their employees. They can expect an honest day's work for fair wages and that's really the extent of it.
