Suggestive Photos (1960s-1970s)

From about 1960 to 1980 in the United States there was a general relaxation of the definition of obscenity in photography, but prosecutions persisted. It hadn't been very long since James Joyce's "Ulysses" had been prosecuted for obscenity and there was a wide divergence of views from locality to locality. For example, "Carnal Knowledge", starring Jack Nicholson and Art Garfunkle, was nominated for an Oscar and prosecuted for obscenity in Georgia in the same year.

As a general rule photos of sexual activities were accepted in large cities outside the South, while simple nude photos might be prosecuted in small towns. So most photo sessions involved a spectrum of photos from topless women to sexual activity. One of the in-between steps were shots that appeared innocent, but suggested sexual activity. One of the most common was having a model with her mouth wide open, or kneeling with her mouth open, which could be taken for a broad smile.
