C-B I lived in a three bed semi, on my own, when the Community charge came in. I had been paying full rates on my house. Next door there were parents and adult children all in employment. They used four times as much as me but paid the as me.
When the Community charge came in they paid their fair share. What was the problem? |

Strangely enough, there seems to have been some fresh interest in what I had to say about the UK Poll Tax seven years ago here on VEF. Not really sure why and I hadn't read any of the follow-up comments after my last posting on this thread.
The most important point the supporters of Mental Maggie seem to have overlooked (7 years ago) were her broken promises. At the end of the 70s, I had the opportunity to talk with Michael Heseltine, who assured me in no uncertain terms that domestic rates were coming to an end. No ifs, no buts, as the Tories continued to like saying, they were being scrapped as soon as possible. But this promise turned out to be total bullshit made by a party that is now so toxic from their amateurish management and mistakes that nobody wants anything to do with them. Poll Tax and the way it was administered using considerable bullying was IMHO, totally unfair and wrong, especially when the promise of totally scrapping rates had been used to win an election. Yes, there were certainly a few people living on their own in large properties who thought it was wonderful. In my case, the local tax for dreadful services (by the standards of that time) went from a few hundred pounds to the other side of a thousand. But this vile tax was a was a disaster and widely hated because it proved so very unfair for the majority of people and was finally replaced by something made even worse by Labour. A terrible mess in my opinion and just another reason why I now have almost no respect for any politicans. |

Where I live, it is cold in winter, as it is for you, and we have laws now that gas/electric utilities cannot shut off service during winter months because of non-payment. In the old days, sometimes old people without much money would get shut off if they couldn't pay and they'd freeze to death. There are scarpers and deadbeats who take advantage of these laws but I still think it's better then the alternative. I wouldn't mind a "nationalized" internet either if it meant the government put in better lines and it was faster, so long as they didn't spy or censor content.

C-B. The Poll Tax was a disaster because of the way it was implemented. People were jogging along paying Rates suddenly found themselves, or their households paying a lot more overnight. Bringing it in gently over several years would have been more sensible. As to Heseltine - lead member of the Heseltine party, a sort of Boris Johnson ego tripping politician but with only five per cent of the intelligence of Boris.

It seems it's what happened on the other side of the Iron Curtain. In the worst cases, their authorities had to sent to gulag or even had to kill to defend themselves, people who wanted to exploit their own community. In our side of the curtain, today we have examples of leaders like Trump mocking the conditions of their fellow citizens who are maintained in poverty, thanks to illegitimated laws, by the richest representants of the population, who wrote them after being elected. That's what explained brilliantly French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau in 1762 in the "Du contrat social". If our justice is not manipulated, bad people only got what they deserved. Quote:
That's probably the first time in human history, we know that liberal human behavior is destroying the future of the next generations.... And we still allow that. |

On television news. Reporters interviewing each other because they can’t be arsed to go out and do a proper interview with someone who really knows what’s going on!
