I used Recuva for a crashed HD, but only works for a small files.
Installed Ubuntu (coz the disk boot of Windows is damaged most of the times) & go in Ubuntu mode & copy files to C drive..

My experience is that most of the times when having trouble with optical media that it is caused by a dirty disc and can be solved by simply cleaning the disc.

Cleaning a disc can simply be done by using some liquid cleaner (the stuff that is used to wash the dishes with) and some lukewarm water. Gently rub the disc's reflecting surface with one of two fingertips always working from the center to the edge (!). Rinse off with lukewarm running water and dry with a soft cloth (again working from the center of the disc to the edge).

For recovering from more serious cases like damaged discs (either physically damaged or damaged filesystem tables) I can recommend IsoBuster (www.isobuster.com, tryout version downloadable). Have had very good results with it in the past.
In case the disc is really heavily damaged it can recover data on a by block basis. Have had to use this when confronted with a couple of old discs where the reflecting layer had literally started to crack.

Recently found a free program called IsoPuzzle which managed to produce better results than IsoBuster in the 2 cases I tried it on. It can be found on the author's webpage at http://members.aon.at/marsoupilami/

I don't think cleaning a cd or dvd with wood glue would do much good since neither has grooves like a vinyl record does.

I don't dispute that toothpaste will work but you have to keep in mind that with toothpaste you polish the disc's surface meaning that a minute portion of the protective layer is/can be removed in the process.
I would recommend to first try cleaning the disc as I described above before trying toothpaste.

There are special repair sets (e.g. by Maxell) available for discs that have been scratched. These sets contain a polishing solution specifically for use on a cd/dvd surface plus a solution for filling up deeper scratches without impairing the laser beam's ability to reach the cd/dvd's reflecting layer.
This would be my choice to use for repairing scratches instead of using toothpaste since any toothpaste particle left inside a scratch will block the laser beam.

Addendum :
Came across this webpage at http://www.burningissues.net/how_to/...atchrepair.htm which reports that Brasso Metal Polish is better at removing scratches than special repair kits. Something to keep in mind if you have it at home already.
