Stranded on the island they must face a strange primitive tribe and a

Cabin In The Woods. All I'll say is I'm glad no one ever gave the plot away. Brilliant!

Today's three hour movie was the 1961 production of El Cid starring Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren and others. This is a sprawling epic of a picture filmed entirely in Spain using all spanish people as extras. Charlton Heston plays a Castillian knight in 11th century Spain called Don Rodrigo. He was just about to be married to Dona played by Sophia Loren when he hears that the North African Moors intend to attack all the cities of Spain and conquer them. His king enlists him to aid in the cause, but the trouble is that all of the cities in Spain all have their own kings and they are always making wars on each other. Heston over time convinces them to stop their bickering and concentrate on their common enemy, the African Moors. He then is given the title El Cid which means The Lord. This movie is fantastic. There were 30,000 extras in the film all with their own costumes that had to be sewed by hand by hundreds of spanish seamstresses. The score of the movie was composed by the great Miklos Rozsa who also wrote scores for films like Ben-Hur, King of Kings and dozens of other great films. The defeat of the Moors eventually led to the unification of Spain as history tells us. The Spanish consider El Cid to be in the same high regard that Americans feel of George Washington.

Battleship is a 2012 science fiction film. It stars Taylor Kitch who I don't know that much and Liam Neeson as the Navy commander. In 2005 a scientific group similar to S.E.T.I. sends out a tremendous radio signal to a planet they detected that is similar to Earth. 7 years later the aliens respond, but not the way we expected. They sent an expeditionary force intending to see if our planet could be conquered by them. The aliens look humanoid, but their faces are slightly apelike and they are extremely sensitive to our Sun's light, and their technology is several hundred years ahead of ours. There is a good amount of action and the ending is good.

Godzilla 1985 (1984) aka The Return of Godzilla

A reboot of the original with a new super-charged Godzilla heading towards Japan. Good old fashioned city stomping by men in rubber monster suits.

Narc (2002)

Narc lacks the depth and mystery of an intelligent crime thriller but it's a decent film nonetheless. The plot is alright and so is the acting. Ray Liotta was finally given another opportunity to unfold his strengths as a talented performer.

Undercover narc Nick Tellis (Jason Patric) chases the drug dealer Dowd through the streets of Detroit after his cover was blown. Dowd holds a child hostage but is shot by Tellis before he can hurt the child. However a stray bullet hits the child's pregnant mother, causing her to lose the baby. Tellis is fired and under investigation. Eighteen months later, he is asked by the Detroit Police Department to investigate the murder of a fellow undercover narc called Michael Calvess (Alan Van Sprang). As he's out of job and options, Tellis reluctantly agrees to pursue the matter but insists that Det. Henry Oak (Ray Liotta) be assigned to the case as his partner since he started the investigation in the first place. Oak is praised by his superiors as a great detective with a high conviction rate but also as a problematic and mentally unstable person, especially since the death of his close friend Calvess, but Tellis wants him as a partner despite all warnings. Naturally the investigation doesn't exactly thrive as they keep facing a myriad of difficulties such as informants ending up dead which results in more questions than answers. In addition, Tellis is facing domestic problems because his wife is very unhappy about him being back on the street due to the bitter aftertaste left behind his previous assignment...

Halloween (1978)
Halloween 2 (1981)
- The 2 are basically one long film, they accomplish making it feel like the same night almost perfectly, no drop in quality at all.
- It's mind blowing to me that Rick Rosenthal directed both 2 & Resurrection because they are farther apart in quality then they are in years apart. I get he was probably going for the feel of Scream & H20 in Resurrection but the direction in R doesn't have ANYTHING in common with 2.
- Carpenter apparently directed a few specific scenes but nothing stands out as having felt different or better than the rest of the film.
- Change in score is interesting, younger me liked 2's theme more, current me likes the original better but both are good.
- Hospital set is comfy & very moody at the same time.
- Imagery of Myers on unwatched security cams is unnerving and cool.

Shock Waves (1977)
- Scenes of the Zombie soldiers waking up/walking along the sea bed in full uniform is chilling & awesome.
- Brooke Adams is good here although not as fleshed out or lively as she was in the following years Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

Godzilla vs Destroyah (1995)
- Fantastic resolution to the heisei timeline.
- Beautiful score.
- Really good homage/rip off of Aliens with the mini Destroyers fighting swat teams.

Eye See You / D-Tox (2002)
- Pretty damn underrated Sylvester Stallone thriller with slasher elements.
- Stallone has opportunity in the first 3rd to bring in some of his better acting and emotional work like he did in Copland.
- Snowbound isolated setting is effective and foreshadows the Norwegian slasher film Cold Prey (2008) which uses the same kinda setting & imagery to even greater effect a few years later.
- Real solid cast

This is the remake of the 1960 Hollywood version of the movie The Alamo. This 2004 movie stars Billy Bob Thornton as Davy Crockett, Patrick Wilson as Lieutenant Travis and Jason Patric as Jim Bowie. While this version is more historically accurate I actually liked the hollywood version better. The actors are better ( John Wayne, Richard Widmark and Lawrence Harvey ), and there is more action, and it has a much better musical score and is 30 minutes longer.
