Day Four

England's batsman dig in and with some good fortune along the way have clawed us back into the game. Johnson dropping Strauss, was the biggest howler of the day and A couple of more difficult chances also went begging.

Australia's bowling looked lifeless, although the pitch was probably the real reason and with Australia, realistically, being the only side in a position to win the first test, tomorrow's early session will be vital for both sides.

End of Day 4
England are not going to lose now, and the lack of firepower in the Australian attack will be a recurring theme in this series.

Indeed. Very depressing day for us Aussie fans while England fans are beaming.

What a contrast between England's first and second innings. Not for the first time, having made a bit of a pig's ear fo their first batting effort, they find some resolve and put in a sterling batting performance in the second innings.

All they need to do now is find the same resolve for the first innings. And this one isn't over yet. They still have to see it through.

There's still a chance for Australia to win the game, but it will need someone in their bowling attack to really turn up and play in the morning session of Day 5. The first 4 days have been intriguing not least as a demonstration of the weaknesses in both teams, which are more evenly matched than the form book suggested. England did not bat well in their first knock and still have something to prove with the bat now. Pete Siddle bowled extremely well on Day One but he has not been supported by his fellow bowlers. I can't help wondering why Aussie selectors have over-bowled their pace squad so much; where are Ryan Harris, Doug Bollinger or even the young pretenders such as Peter George? Injured, I do believe, playing in glorified beer matches. Cricket Australia should be looking after its squad a bit more, seems to me. If they were, Mitchell Johnson and Ben Hilfenhaus might be under some pressure for their places in the team after such a lacklustre display, and that would do them no harm at all.

I also wonder a little bit about Nathan Hauritz; suddenly he is no good? He made problems for England both at Cardiff and Edgbaston in 2009. This Xavier Doherty hasn't shown me much so far to make me think he is a better bet than Hauritz, though I admit one undistinguished performance on an unhelpful surface proves nothing. Perhaps Hauritz shot one of the selectors' pet dog?

It would make for a great match if Australia was left needing 220 to win from two sessions.I think Swann would be in his element here. But isn't cricket so full of surprises? Wickets tumble on one day and not the next. Perhaps it's down to the individual cricket ball-the one on the first day moved a little and the others didn't.

England are not safe yet.

Although along with everyone else I think taht this match will be a draw. We've still got to bat out the first two sessions. Which, as we all know is easier said than done. But on the last day on a five day old wicket anything could happen.

C'mon England.

Well that's that for the first test. I thought we were going to crumble but the pitch was a road in the end.

Looks like both teams have problems in the bowling and fielding department on flat pitches.

After England's first day performance. To fightback the way they did & get a draw has been a better result for England who will take a lot of confidence into the next match than it will be for Australia.

Whether or not Australia will recover from what has surely been a blow to their morale is yet to be seen.

The next match is going to be very interesting, there already appear to be similarities to last years series over here. With the first match drawn all be it under slighly different circumstances.

I stayed up to watch this match up until Lunchtime and I have to say that was a magnificent display of batting, measured and controlled. Cook at last showing the potential with a fantastic and well-deserved 200+ and Trott easing to his 100 without panic or fuss. Australia looked all over the place, their bowlers were truly dire, but do you blame them or the pitch? 517-1 is an unbelievable score, I doubt you will see that again and so many records tumbling that have stood for 60 odd years in some cases. Is it me or did Mitchell Johnson look like someone from the Village People? Its bad enough Pietersen has a silly moustache but seriously, they both need to shave it off. As I said earlier in this thread before the Ashes began you must never write off Australia, after all, Adeleide will be a different ground and pitch. I also must single out the support from the 'Barmy Army' you would have thought you were at a football match with their chants and songs but where were the Australian crowd-that place looked half empty!
