A English wicket in the first over!

I'm Scottish -I don't mind who wins.

That was a typically English start.

Day one and oh dear.

Peter Siddell has a birthday party and not the start England were looking for.

Round one to the wounded beast. Hopefully England can improve tomorrow.

End of Day 1
England 260
Aust 0/25
That was a pretty exciting day's cricket, the ball swung and moved off the seam all day from what I could see. Siddle gets his hat-trick by pitching the ball up rather than banging it in short. Great stuff, good on him. Johnson was pedestrian and needs to improve. Very poor dropped catch by Haddin, Test keepers have to do better than that. Bell looks in pretty good shape to me and he's not going to be tormented by Warne this time.
Our reserve keeper, Tim Paine, has had a finger broken in a meaningless 20/20 game a few days ago. Well done, Cricket Australia.
So we wait and see how 260 looks when Australia bats tomorrow.

I remember Trevor Bailey saying that you should always pick the best wicket keeper available regardless.Nowadays the trend seems to be to choose an OK keeper who can bat a bit. But it only takes a dropped catch or two to turn a match.

Catches win matches. An old cliche admittedly. But it's quite true also.

I try hard to be an English cricket supporter, but they do make it very difficult. When it comes to the crunch, these days, sadly, they seem to be very reliable. You can rely on them to let you down. I do hope that I am proved wrong.

One thought though. Maybe if they practiced their batting, rather than how to imitate a sprinkler, the standard would improve.

I never quite bought into the idea that Australia would not/could not raise their game when the Ashes are up for grabs. It is England who sometimes can and sometimes can't do this. But what I observed on Day One at the Gabba was interesting and by no means as one-sided as the English media with their England-fails-again knee jerk reportage would have us believe. Some of the England players will know they sold themselves much too cheaply, especially Strauss; Prior and Broad, however, were dismissed by excellent pace bowling from the badly under-rated Peter Siddle, who made a very good impression on me in the 2009 series and looks set to be a force in this one also. He alone seems to understand how to get the best from a slowish and not very responsive wicket; were I Broad, Finn or especially Anderson, I would consider his length and line most thoughtfully. Bell, though it hurts me to admit it, played a good fighting innings to get the score past 250, and Jimmy Anderson, not for the first time, demonstrated that batting in a difficult situation is a great way to find out if a man has spine or not; that's one of the best things in Test Cricket for me, the sight of a side batting under pressure and showing fight. Anderson has a backbone.

This was an excellent day for Australia and a rotten day for England, but Australia dropped catches and made mistakes. They have not won this match yet by a long chalk and the England bowlers actually have a fine chance to bowl England right back into the game. It will require skill, commitment and character, because Australia do have the whip hand. But nothing has been settled so far. Good bowling will still have a say and if the right pressure is applied to the Australian batters, I predict some of them will also fail, though probably not Ponting, who is very very cool. Day Two will tell us if England have the character it takes to get back into this game, or not really...

Cricket... is this the game where some bloke hits a ball like structure with a stick?
