Red face Songs That Hit You (Below The Buckle)

Earlier this evening, listening to some old tunes - I'm transported back to another time & place

This thread is for posting links to the songs that always emotionally whack you with a sucker punch,
bringing a tear to the eye, make you reminisce that lost love or perhaps some memories of a sad time
Some songs just do that, especially if there's a personal moment attached to the lyric, perhaps a time in a relationship or family difficulties, but there are those emotionally charged tracks.

I'll Kick Off with a band that can often knock the wind out of my trousers, Tears For Fears.
I really don't know why these songs get to my emotional bones, but they do rip me to the core each & every time I hear them ...
2 Tracks from the 1989 album, "Sowing The Seeds Of Love". The first selection obviously reminds me that i'm getting closer to my curtain every day & the hope that we can each make our lives better, the second.., I really can't explain why it brings a tear to my eye.

I could be happy, I could be quite naive
It's only me and my shadows, Happy in our make believe
Soon We Will Be Older, When we gonna make it work?

And with the hounds at bay
I'll call your bluff
Cos it would be okay
To walk on tiptoes everyday

And when I think of you and all the love that's due
I'll make a promise, I'll make a stand
Cos to these big brown eyes, this comes as no surprise
We've got the whole wide world in our hands

Advice for the young at heart
Soon we will be older
When we gonna make it work ?

Love is promise
Love is a souvenir
Once given
Never forgotten, never let it disappear
This could be our last chance
When we gonna make it work ?
Working hour is over

And how it makes me weep
Cos someone sent my soul to sleep

And when I think of you and all the love that's due
I'll make a promise, I'll make a stand
Cos to these big brown eyes, this comes as no surprise
We've got the whole wide world in our hands

Advice for the young at heart
Soon we will be older
When we gonna make it work ?

Working hour is over
We can do anyhting that we want
Anything that we feel like doing
Advice...

All our love and all our of pain
Will be but a tune
The Sun and the Moon
The wind and the rain
Hand in hand we'll do and die
Listening to the band that made us cry

Default U2 - All I Want Is You

http://youtu.be/Et6epq5fslg

You say you want diamonds on a ring of gold
You say you want your story to remain untold

But all the promises we made
From the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you

You say you'll give me a highway with no one on it
A treasure just to look upon it
All the riches in the night

You say you'll give me eyes in a world of blindness
A river in a time of dryness
A harbour in the tempest

But all the promises we make
From the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you

You say you want your love to work out right
To last with me through the night

You say you want diamonds on a ring of gold
Your story to remain untold
Your love not to grow cold

All the promises we break
From the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you

You
All I want is...you
All I want is...you
All I want is...you

My first love, Lindsay, died in a car crash when I was 17, she was just 16. This was her favourite song. The lyrics seemed more potent to me after she passed. I still love the song, it makes me smile and upsets me at the same time.

Red face Excellent ,albeit soppy thread idea matey chops .

INXS - Never Tear Us Apart

Don't ask me
What you know is true
Don't have to tell you
I love your precious heart

I..........I was standing
You were there
Two worlds collided
And they could never tear us apart

We could live for a thousand years
But if I hurt you
I'd make wine from your tears

I told you
That we could fly
Cause we all have wings
But some of us don't know why

I..........I was standing
You were there
Two worlds collided
And they could never...ever...tear us apart

I don't ask me
I was standing
You know it's true
You were there
Worlds collided
Two worlds collided
We're shining through
And they could never tear us apart

You don't ask me
You were standing
You know it's true
I was there
Worlds collided
Two worlds collided
We're shining through
And they could never tear us apart

A song of a (abroad) little-known band.

Silbermond, My Heart Beats For You

You and nothing else but you
are so close to my heart
and I don’t know any other way
than to be there for you, yeah

You are simply irreplaceable
You are like a part of me, yeah
You bring
a breath of fresh air into my world
You make this life worth living

My heart beats for you
My heart beats for you

For me, you’re the only one with patent rights
no, you don’t have any competition
You’re everything
extraordinary
You make every theme recur,
you make so much sense, yeah

You are simply irreplaceable,
you are a part of me, yeah

And you make me soar
oh and you keep me so alive,
you take every day to the seashore

My heart beats for you
My heart beats for you

And you make me soar
oh and you keep me so alive
You make everything twice as easy

My heart beats for you
My heart beats for you

Big Grin Oh gawd i think thanks to this emotional thread i might be turning gay ? , better nudge my boyfriend awake and double check that`s not the case !

Regina Spektor - Fidelity

I never loved nobody fully
Always one foot on the ground
And by protecting my heart truly
I got lost in the sounds
I hear in my mind all of these voices
I hear in my mind all of these words
I hear in my mind all of this music
And it breaks my heart
And it breaks my heart
And it breaks my heart
When it breaks my heart
And suppose I never ever met you
Suppose we never fell in love
Suppose I never ever let you Kiss me so sweet and so soft
Suppose I never ever saw you
Suppose we never ever called
Suppose I kept on singing love songs
Just to break my own fall
Just to break my fall
Just to break my fall
Just to break my fall
Break my fall Break my fall
All my friends say that of course
It's gonna get better
Gonna get better Better better better better Better better better!
I never love nobody fully
Always one foot on the ground
And by protecting my heart truly
I got lost in the sounds
I hear in my mind all of these voices
I hear in my mind all of these words
I hear in my mind all of this music
And it breaks my heart
And it breaks my heart
I hear in my mind all of these voices
I hear in my mind all of these words
I hear in my mind all of this music
And it breaks my heart
And it breaks my heart It breaks my heart
When it breaks my heart
When it breaks my heart
When it breaks my heart
Breaks my heart
When it breaks my heart
When it breaks my heart
When it breaks my heart
When it breaks my heart

J.J.Cale - Sensitive Kind

Very personal memories of this one ... full of happiness, and ultimately of regret.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Vc63l5CdJc

Don't take her for granted, she has a hard time
Don't misunderstand her or play with her mind
Treat her so gently, it will pay you in time
You've got to know she's the sensitive kind.

Tell her you love her, each and every night
And you will discover she will treat you right
If you believe, I know you will find
There ain't nothing like the sensitive kind.

She gets lonely waiting for you
You are the only thing to help her through
Don't take her for granted, she has a hard time
You've got to know she's the sensitive kind.

I can't say that I have a specific moment attached to it, but this simple, lovely song moves me deeply every time I hear it. And while I am not a huge fan of videos in general, this one works beautifully to heighten the emotional impact.

Into My Arms by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds

I don't believe in an interventionist God
But I know, darling, that you do
But if I did I would kneel down and ask Him
Not to intervene when it came to you
Not to touch a hair on your head
To leave you as you are
And if He felt He had to direct you
Then direct you into my arms

Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms

And I don't believe in the existence of angels
But looking at you I wonder if that's true
But if I did I would summon them together
And ask them to watch over you
To each burn a candle for you
To make bright and clear your path
And to walk like Christ in grace and love
And guide you into my arms

Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms

But I believe in love
And I know that you do too
And I believe in some kind of path
That we can walk down, me and you
So keep your candles burning
Make her journey bright and pure
That she will keep returning
Always and evermore

Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms

Default Great Thread

Purely for personal reasons, very strong lyrics

Luther Vandross - Dance with my Father

Back when I was a child
Before life removed all the innocents
My father would lift me high
And dance with my mother and me and than
Spin me around till I felt asleep
Then up the stairs he would carry me
And I knew for sure.. I was loved

If I could get another chance

Another walk.. Another dance with him
I'd play a song that would never, never end
How I loved, loved, loved to dance with my father again (oehoeh)

When I and my mother would disagree

To get my way I would run from her to him
He made me laugh just to comfort me (yeah yeah)
Then finally make me do just what my mamma said
Later that night when I was asleep
He left a dollar under my sheet
Never dreamed that he would be gone from me

If I could steal one final glance

One final step.. One final dance with him
I'd play a song that would never, never end
Cause I love, love, love to dance with my father again

Sometimes I listen outside her door

And I hear how mamma cried for him
I pray for her even more than me
I pray for her even more than me

I know I'm praying for much to much

But could you send back
The only man she loved
I know you don't do it usually
But dear Lord she's dying
To dance with my father again

Every night I fall a sleep

And this is all I ever dreamt

Soldier - Angelic Upstarts
(No explanation needed)

In a station in the city a British soldier stood
Talking to the people there if the people would
Some just stared in hatred, and others turned in pain
And the lonely British soldier wished he was back home again

Come join the British Army! said the posters in his town
See the world and have your fun, come serve before the Crown
The jobs were hard to come by and he could not face the dole
So he took his country's shilling and enlisted on the roll

For there was no fear of fighting, the Empire long was lost
Just ten years in the army getting paid for being bossed
Then leave a man experienced a man who's made the grade
A medal and a pension, some mem'ries and a trade

Then came the call to Ireland as the call had came before
Another bloody chapter in an endless civil war
The priests they stood on both sides the priests they stood behind
Another fight in Jesus's name the blind against the blind

The soldier stood between them, between the whistling stones
And then the broken bottles that led to broken bones
The petrol bombs that burnt his hands the nails that pierced his skin
And now wished that he'd stayed at home surrounded by his kin

The station filled with people the soldier soon was bored
But better in the station than where the people warred
The room filled up with mothers with daughters and with sons
Who stared with itchy fingers at the soldier and his gun

A yell of fear a screech of brakes the shattering of glass
The window of the station broke to let the package pass
A scream came from the mothers as they ran towards the door
Dragging children crying from the bomb upon the floor

The soldier stood and could not move his gun he could not use
He knew the bomb had seconds and not minutes on the fuse
He could not run to pick it up and throw it in the street
There were far too many people there, too many running feet

Take cover! yelled the soldier, Take cover for your lives
And the Irishmen threw down their young and stood before their wives
They turned towards the soldier, their eyes alive with fear
For God's sake save our children or they'll end their short lives here

The soldier moved towards the bomb his stomach like a stone
Why was this his battle God why was he alone
He lay down on the package and he murmured one farewell
To those at home in England to those he loved so well

He saw the sights of summer felt the wind upon his brow
The young girls in the city parks how precious were they now
The soaring of the swallow the beauty of the swan
The music of the turning world so soon would it be gone

A muffled soft explosion and the room began to quake
The soldier blown across the floor his blood a crimson lake
They never heard him cry or shout they never heard him moan
And they turned their children's faces from the blood and from the bones

The crowd outside soon gathered and the ambulances came
To carry off the body of a pawn lost to the game
And the crowd they clapped and cheered and they sang their rebel songs
One soldier less to interfere where he did not belong

But will the children growing up learn at their mothers' knees
The story of that soldier who bought their liberty
Who used his youthful body as a means towards the end
Who gave his life to those who called him murderer not friend

Being a great big manly man that eats nails for breakfast and spits in death's eye, I don't normally get emotional but this song gets me every time:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arZL3jt20Xc

Nothing Takes the Place of You by the great Koko Taylor

I don't know why but this song always chokes me up and brings a tear to my eye.

Now excuse me while I go find my teddy bear.
