Well, it's about Australians more than Australia. They were Australian seamen on an Australian warship, but the warship was in the Persian Gulf, of all places, which makes the jungle camouflage even more interesting

-Similar sort of hilarious dislocations aren't strange to political leaders worldwide. Good old G. W. Bush met with Putin in 2001, in his own words, "in Slovakia", while, in fact, the meeting took place in Slovenia. Never mind, it's close in American (and Russian) terms, and even the flag colours are the same, so what's the fuss?! If I remember it correctly, Clinton made a similar remark about hesitating to send his soldiers to the "swamps of Bosnia". Or was it, again, the unbeatable Mr. G. W.? Imagine the army preparations dependent on his decisions solely.

But I am also amazed by the armies in Europe during 17th and 18th century. They would get all fancied up like faggots, with feathered caps and colourful uniforms descendant armies today use in parades and as a tourist attraction (although I am sure each and every one of them would whoop my ass), and show up on the battlefield to exercise discipline and honour:

Wars were an efficient solution to regulate male population by easily killing the soldiers.
Now we don't need anymore flashy colors, we have thermic cameras and biologic weapons.
But probably Australian government believes that there are too many males in the country.
