Maybe i came to it too late , or it`s merely the segments i`ve heard ,but i never really got the Goons.

The Ying Tang Ying Tang stuff , no idea what they`re going on about

Mind you the lads concerned seemed to be having a great time

Brief detouring off topic , i did really like Milligan`s Q series though

I shall indeed. It was I think Harry Secombe who sent him to Peter, but this was Peter telling the story-he was met at the stage door once by a man dressed in a scout uniform and it was the voice that got him-he immediately gave him the address of the theatre where Peter was appearing in something. When he arrived, the scout went up to him and said "I was told to tell you I am genius!" to which Peter looked bemused but managed to get rid of him and off he went on his bike-years later Peter recalled this meeting and used the voice as Bluebottle.

Greenskull- it was the Ying Tong Song mate-the b-side incidentally had Spike Milligan singing I'm Walking Backwards(for Christmas) and I still have that record.

Thankyou Greenman, I had never heard that story before! I always thought that Bluebottle was merely a figment of Spikes fecund immagination.

I met Spike a couple of times, and yes he was a slice short of a sandwich, but a really nice guy. Spike was Spike, and there are few 'comedians' that are exactly as you 'know' them, from TV., but Spike was such a person. He actually reckoned that his mental problems were as a result of the stress of having to come up with the Goons script every week.

He lived towards the end of his life at Hadley Green in North London, and he appeared in court at one point because a man allowed his dog to sh*t in Spikes driveway every morning, and Spike thought it wasn't the dogs fault, it was the owners. That thinking I cannot find fault with, the only difference was that Spike shot the owner of the dog with an airgun!! He didn't blame the dog, so he shot the owner!!

Quite probably neither did they!!!! But as you say, they were enjoying doing whatever it was they were doing! And so do we Goons fans!!

That is the beauty of the Goons, even now, and it is nearly 60 years since they were first recorded, many people still have such fun recreating their daft voices and antics, myself included, though I cannot mimic Neddy to save my life!

As Spike (Eccles, in Robin Hood and His Mirry Mon) , said;' I'd like to see them do this on television!'

Default Ying Tong origin

I'm going to rely totally on memory here and not dig out any of Spike's books

As I recall the origin of the ying tong song was to do with an exchange between Spike and his wartime friend Harry Edgington. Someone was persistently mispronouncing Harry's surname. He lost his temper and repeated "It's Edgington I tell you, ington, ington, ington" to which Spike responded "iddli i po".

When the Goons got together post-war, they met Harry Edgington, heard the story, and developed it becoming the ying tong song.

I've got the Goons 45 rpm EP that was bought for me when I was a kid brand new as a treat when I was recovering from a short spell in hospital. It's in a glossy sleeve covered in cartoons by Spike. There's one on the Bay. This was the search I used 'goons 45 rpm ep walking backwards for christmas'

Default Re: The Last Goon Show of All

This was aired as part of the BBC's 50th Anniversary. Prince Charles, a noted Goons fan, was unable to attend the recording, as he was at sea during his naval service, so he sent a message that he hoped "they'll find time to give a performance for a ship-ful of Sea Goons"

So many.. but if I had to pick one Goons line... (from The Jet Propelled Guided NAAFI)

Grytpyppe-Thynne: "Goodbye, Charlie.."
Prime Minister Neddie Seagoon: "But my name's not Charlie!"
G-T "No, but I will always think of you as one..."

Huge fan of The Goon Show, the Q series and anything to do with Spike,Peter and Harry.
As Rustler stated Spike did indeed suffer several nervous breakdowns from having to come up with a script every week for 10 years (1951-1961) But was a very troubled comic genius before from his time in the army during WW2 and his birth and upbringing in India during the end of colonisation and adapting to a normal life in Britain.

Favorite line

Gryptype Thynne:" Moriaty, where are you?
Moriaty: " Over here in the piano, i'm hidin'"
G T: " Dont be silly Hydens been dead for years."

He fell in de wawta!

Don't think India had much to do with his mental health, he had a very happy childhood there. Post colonial guilt is something dreamed up by polytechnic professors in social work.

His problems started with spending prolonged time under enemy fire in an OP in Italy. He went bomb happy (shell shock, PTSD whatever). The medics gave him a very short rest and sent him back into the line too early and he really flipped. Poor sod
