The Turn of the Screw (1999 TV adaptation)
There have been many (maybe too many ) adaptations of this classic story, but I always go back to this one. I know it's a TV movie, but it does star Colin Firth who went on to nail it in The King's Speech. Also starred Jodhi May. Who I thought was very cute. Okay, okay, back to the story. Henry James penned a masterpiece and knew how to really screw (pun intended ) with his readers on the subject of ghosts, realism, and the supernatural. This story has raised issues such as whether the ghosts are real, is the governess mad (May's character), etc. But that is a very surface-level, amateur perspective, in my humble opinion. For me, the most terrifying aspect of this story was that it had no answers. One of the greatest fears humans have is not knowing the cause of something unnatural or not normal. You go to a doctor sick and the doctor can't diagnose your problem, for example. In this story, the ghosts are simply symbolic of the unconsciousness we all repress and can never fully understand. Yet, the story contains considerable depth as evident in the amount of literary discussion and criticism it has generated. Sometimes there are no answers, and that is truly terrifying. As Jame's himself said.... "No, no—there are depths, depths! The more I go over it, the more I see in it, and the more I see in it, the more I fear. I don’t know what I don’t see—what I don’t fear!”

I'm surprised only 1 post mentioned the 1981 Ghost Story

Ghost Story Revisited: Why it Should be Remembered I'm assuming that Dog Soldier did mean the 1981 movie. It's a classic with some nice acting, giving a number of the Old Guard a last chance to shine. Of course, the book was better, but that is the case with almost all movies based on a best seller.
