Who would have the hardest time adapting.
Lets say that the average person from 1317 and the average person from 2017 switched places. The person from 1317 would be in 2017, and the person from 2017 would end back in 1317. So who do you think would have the hardest time adapting the person from 1317 or the person from 2017 ?
And lets say that they are both British from Colchester. I think both would have a very hard time adapting, But i do think it would be a bit tougher for the person from 2017 to adapt to 1317 than it would be for a person from 1317 to adapt to life in 2017 What do you think ? |

Well, let's look at a few things both would have to overcome.
First is the language barrier. Both would have problems being understood as the English language of 1317 is very different of the English language of 2017. Second would be foods. The food of 1317 is much more basic and plain. Spices that we take for granted were incredibily rare and expensive or completely unknown. Things like tea, coffee, chocolate and refined sugar were unknown to most Europeans of the 14th Century. Third is work. The person from the 14th Century would be amazed at how not labor-intensive much of the work of the 21st Century is, and vice versa for the 21st Century person. The person from 1317 would be in severe culture shock from the fashions of today, the overt sexuality of our entertainment, the lack of religious feeling by many, the multiple "foreign" cultures that exist in the cities of today, the ease of travel to anywhere on the globe, the incredible advances in medical technology and science in general, the diversity in all fields of the arts, the noise of modern scoiety and much more. And again, it would be just about the opposite for the person of 2017. Ultimately because of the great culture shock, think that the person of 1317 would have the harder time adjusting to 2017.

I think the person from 1317 would adjust easily after a nearly overwhelming jolt. Yes, they'd have to learn a language, but people back then were used to learning other languages quickly--they didn't have English as a lingua franca.
The overt sexuality of our entertainment is not new at all--only the medium is new. The ancient Greeks, Romans, Indians--name them all, basically--had their public sexual vulgarity. (Especially the Romans!) Food, drink, cell phones and 40 hour work weeks--they would positively revel in the wonders of how we live our lives. Once they figured out that we don't have to answer to priests and kings and that we can jump on airplanes and into cars and have medical solutions for problems that killed their moms and dads and uncles and babies...well, they'd be pretty impressed, I think. So I vote for the 1317 people adjusting more easily and quickly. |

I would think that someone from 1317 would have an easier time adjusting to the new things they would encounter in 2017, than someone from 2017 would have adjusting to doing without all the "modern conveniences" we've become accustomed to.

Even if it depends on the kind of 2017 people who would be sent in the past. 2017 people interested and managing survivalism or Amish people would have almost no problems to live in 1317. We can easily live without any cars, airplanes, smartphones as long we are not too materialistic. But if you are someone who take care about hygiene and basic modern confort like sweet clothes, warm house in winter, eating good vegetables and fruits.... That would be a major challenge. People were extremely dirty at that time. They never brushed their teeth, they probably stinked, in cities the street were disgusting. Then there were all this "master-slave classes" problems. |

Person from 2017 would probably be burned at the stake for constantly moaning about missing their phone.

It would be a lot easier adapting up than down,Especially as the Fourteenth century is considered to be the worst time to live...

The person from 1317 will die of the shock of the modern world.
The person from 2017 will just die of boredom. |
