Best book ever on this crucial campaign, told from the Japanese side.

Just finished: Hero of the Empire by Candice Millard

Combination of a great adventure story and a history lesson. Highly recommended!

I just finished the prologue and the first chapter.
Maybe it's because I always was interested to observe animals... but I really like the de Waals' stories and observations.
He introduces the profane reader in concepts that we probably already thought, but that we didn't deeply study. Like the concept of "Umwelt" described by German biologist Jakob von Uexküll, who explained that we have to think and understand, how a specific species feels or looks at the world, in the way to correctly interpret its behaviour.

I can't put it down.

If you like Bugliosi's book, try "Case Closed" by Gerald Posner. It goes pretty much by the same tack...shreds all the JFK conspiracy theories. I used to be a leaner towards a conspiracy until after reading Posner's book, and seeing a Frontline documentary, they both changed by mind on it.
