Can we have radio shows here, too?
A new set of Hitchhiker's Guide episodes coming to Radio4, with (most of) the original cast. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-41594664 |

The Snowman with Michael Fassbender, Rebecca Ferguson, JK Simmons & Val Kilmer and by the director of Let the right one in & Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c44kam_8N3I Comes out this weekend & is getting apocalyptically bad reviews. http://oneofus.net/2017/10/highly-su...s-the-snowman/ Some calling it the worst movie of the year. The director has already come out and stated that 15% of the script didn't get filmed because they were so rushed by the studios. |

I don't remember any of those films getting overall good reviews, or getting good reviews for their writing...

And as a big fan of the original all I can say is WOW! The guys who made this film have really spent a lot of time watching and researching the first film because they've really managed to nail the whole atmosphere and cinematography of the original right down to the smallest of detail. The cinematography is AMAZING. Right from the start we see beautiful vistas of landscapes flying before us-farmland, even a huge dam, all accompanied by instrumental music much like the beginning of the first film. There is a strong desire to remind us of elements from the first film too-for example we see the 'shimmering water' effect that was in Alvin Tyrell's office in the first film again being (subtly) used here too. There are some nice little details to this one too. In the first film the story/action takes place almost entirely within the decaying confines of Los Angeles. In the new film, although primarily still within Los Angeles there are whole sequences that take place out in the open countryside (which are portrayed has being just has bleak and gloomy has the cityscapes). One of the nice touches that this film has was that they actually brought two of the original characters from the first film (and this doesn't include Harrison Ford!) back for this one, which came has something of a nice surprise to me! I'm not going to tell you WHICH two characters they are (because in so doing I be giving some of the plot away) but they are played by the same two actors/actresses that they played them last time (you can check the credits). Like I said I wasn't expecting to see them in this one. However, despite my thorougher enjoyment I do feel there are some minor flaws with it. Firstly, at 163 minutes it's a long film and I found that, although the story was good there are periods where for about 10-15 minutes not much really seems to happen on screen and at times like this the pace of the film really seems to slow down somewhat. And whilst we're talking about the story I warn you now it is quite complex in places. You WILL have to pay close attention to what's going because there some twists and turns in plotline throughout (the first of which occurs, for me, within the first 15 minutes, which I didn't see coming). There were a few instances where I thought I knew what was happening-only to discover about half hour later that a character says something/something happens and I realize that I had misunderstood what the scriptwriters were trying to get at. And although it's beautifully shot some of the plot ideas and visuals do come across a little too conceptional (and almost abstract) in nature sometimes for some viewers. Despite all this is a great film for fans of the original, and I really enjoyed it. If you like the first film I think you'll enjoy this a lot. |
