There is alot of superb advice from all those who posted.
I'll add my two cents. First and foremost, self defense is exactly that: self defense. Merely feeling threatened would not be deemed sufficient grounds in either a criminal or civil trial to attack another person. Also, there is the question of "proportional response"; i.e., if someone pushes you and you respond by clubbing him over the head I can guarantee you'll be going to jail. Your employer might not be too happy with you defending yourself since it opens the door to a possible civil suit by your assailant. Sounds crazy, but it may be true. I had a coworker who apparently was trying to bait me into a fight inside the store so that he could then sue our employer. I got wise to it and invited him outside, away from the closed circuit cameras where I would arrange for him to "slip" on the ice outside. Suddenly gave up trying to bait me into a fight. I agree that Jiu Jitsu is an ideal art for self defense. Again, you can restrain an attacker without necessarily doing him any permanent harm. While the striking arts like boxing, karate, tae kwon do, kung fu, muay thai are flashy and more dynamic, anytime you strike someone, especially to the head, neck, throat, or other vital areas you risk causing permanent injury if not death. If you land a good old fashioned right hook to the jaw and your attacker collapses to the ground and hits his head you may find yourself in legal trouble even though you had no intention to cause grievous bodily harm. Funny thing about studying any martial art: when you come to understand exactly how much damage you can cause to the human body you become less anxious to get into a situation where you might have to apply your skills. As I said, all the respondents should be commended for the sage insights they shared here. |

Keeping in mind all the previous recommendations about legal etc., if you are looking for a martial art that is actually a real combat skill for true self-defense and not just a fitness routine or meditation aide go with Krav Maga ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krav_Maga ). Unless you look really hard or get extremely lucky (or both) any other school will NOT teach you actual real world fighting techniques.

I'm long past my boxing years. But never have and never will exploit it. It is self defense. But a fist does not stop a bullet or a knife. And when someone is down the show is over. Beating the shit out of somebody on the floor is not on.

The law on self defence is basically this "if you feel threatened you have the right to defend yourself, but the force you use must be proportinate", got that??? Basically despite what some may say you can do a pre-emptive strike, but best thing to do is to walk away. If they strike first then its game on, but dont be stupid. And if their running away dont run after them.
I suppose Im lucky Im taught self defence techniques.

Hey, I'm older now, and I gotta be a little more careful. Not that I want to. In the old days my temper would explode like an ass full of flarin' hemmeroids. Like Clint Eastwood said..."a man's gotta know his limitations"....
Still, if I've had a few and you look at me the wrong way, I could throw down at the drop of a fuckin'..... Nah...I'm only kiddin'. Kinda... |
