Gresley A4 class pacific locomotive "bittern" has re-created its stablemate mallards record breaking run of 1938. On 3rd July 1938 Mallard set the world record for a steam locomotive of 126 MPH.

"Arrested for Feeding the Homeless in Violation of New Orlando Law"

Members of the organization Food Not Bombs were in good spirits as they passed out corn on the cob, rice, beans and other vegetarian dishes to the homeless and hungry in an Orlando park. This cheer was interrupted when police officers on bicycles arrived and arrested five of the volunteers.
This is not the first time this scene has played out for members of Food Not Bombs.
Since June 1, a dozen members of the group have been arrested for violating a new Orlando city ordinance that prohibits sharing food with large groups in downtown parks more than twice a year.

The mayor of Orlando even branded them "food terrorists."

Buddy Dyer is the mayor of Orlando that pushed the legislation through. He had quite a lot of support for it, especially among the wealthier Orlando residents. Buddy's stated goal is to make Orlando a "world-class" city and a destination in and of itself and not just being the place where Disney World is located. To do this Buddy and Orlando have spent a lot of money on civic arenas, performing art centers, and such. Having homeless people around tends to make these places unappealing to tourists and wealthier people and Orlando has a lot of homeless people. Many stay year round as it is quite warm. Like many other cities and mayors, they believe if you remove the support systems that aid the homeless, they will just go away. Preferably to a city that is a competitor for the tourist dollar.

Poor people should move to warm places like Africa or India, it's where they belong, not blighting our beautiful western society, and they would save heaps on their heating bills

I was jesting

They'd be crazy not to go away - why stay where you're not wanted?

It all boils down to money.
Any sensible city/town will give large amounts of money to the itinerants, and more importantly, a one way ticket to Elsewhere.
Well.... it beats culling them.

Default Re: Orlando sucks

Sure would be nice to see the mayor and his cronies down on their luck praying for a meal and someone says "Sorry, not only are you not allowed to pray in a public place but we can't feed you either. We can, however, kick you while you're down. Ha Ha Ha."

In reality, it would be even better if tour operators would avoid Orlando. There are homeless everywhere it wouldn't be a shock to see them at a so called tourist destination. The surprise would be to not see them. The problem with the idiots in Orlando is they are tarring everyone with the same brush. Not everyone who is down is there because they're alcoholics or drug addicts. In today's society there is a class of persons who are actually working poor. They hold jobs and try to be responsible yet still can't make ends meet. How can you deny them a meal? I say F**K Orlando.

A few months ago a couple of guys staying in a homeless hostel broke into my garage and stole my lawn mower - lucky for me the stupid bastards got caught pushing it along the road at 2AM on a freezing February morning.

I don't want no homeless people near me -and I don't give a toss where they go or what happens to them.

In other words, another NIMBY idiot who thinks any problem that is out of sight isn't a problem. So instead of doing anything to improve his city's economy and create jobs so most of the homeless can stop being homeless and there is a tax base to provide the funds for the services necessary for the rest, he'd rather pass an idiotic, poorly thought-out law that if actually applied equally would be provoking protests and get him run out of town. If I had any money I'd contribute to their legal fund so they can challenge the constitutionality of that piece of stupidity.
