Here is the best-resolution shot of this image I’ve seen so far (from an eBay listing, apparently scanned directly from an original photo still or lobby card). As discussed earlier in this thread, a “clear” version of this scene doesn’t seem to have made it into the distribution channels of DVD or VHS prints: the only versions of the movie I’ve found all have the scene “darkened for family TV” version which makes it nearly impossible to make the figures out (damn you, Ted Turner and Blockbuster video!). But in the movie release, of course, everything was crisp and clear (even though a “blue lens” was used to make it seem like late evening) as it is here in this photo.

In her interview in the book Drive-in Dream Girls: A Galaxy of B-movie Starlets of the Sixties by Tom Lisanti, Sue Ane describes how she and co-actress Hope Holiday in that scene were a bit uncomfortable about being completely naked in front of the whole crew on the set but that “were allowed to wear bikini bottoms because that part of our body was immersed in the water but it had to look like we were bare on top. We conceived of the idea to paste falsies over the boobs. So we were able to get onto the set and into the water but we forgot that the water would loosen the glue. Our pasties came floating to the top and ruined the shot but it was good for a laugh on the set.”

Here’s a scan of Sue Ane’s glorious bare 29-year-old hind side, taken from a better source than previously posted. With a special “here you go” to ta2ta4.

It’s not (unfortunately) a “hi-res” image from a glossy photograph, but rather scanned from the larger-format, better quality hardback edition of the book The Show Business Nobody Knows by Earl Wilson. (The previous posting was scanned from the smaller, cheaper quality paperback of the book). It shows the halftone dots of the print, and some defects of the particular copy I accessed. So far as I’ve been able to determine, this book is the only place this image appeared. In the caption, Wilson claims it is a shot from the “European version” of The Rounders (the movie in which Sue Ane had a skinny-dipping scene and a bare-bottom flash). That claim is pure crap, of course — Earl Wilson was what used to be called a “gossip columnist” back in the 50s and 60s (today they are called “Fox news anchors” ) who simply made up anything he liked if it sounded good. In actual fact, this image is an off-set publicity shot that Sue Ane posed for (she isn’t wearing the wig she does in the movie, and this is obviously the balcony of a hotel, which doesn’t appear in the film), possibly for the book itself. So there’s little hope a “quality lobby card” version of this will show up. But this is an improvement on the previous version available.

To pose for these kinds of shot, Sue Ane must have been in “career boosting” mode in the mid 60s—The Rounders was released in 1965; a year later she posed for the Playboy shoot from A Fine Madness. The nudie images seem to have helped her get “sexy” roles, since she landed a plum secondary role a year after that in Guide to the Married Man, where a fair amount of the film focused on shots her (clothed, sadly) ass.

Higher res images than I've seen previously, scanned directly from original lobby cards for A Man Called Dagger (1967). The originals are somewhat grainy (typical of movie poster items from 40+ years ago) so this is as good as it gets. Enjoyable nonetheless (and rather proof positive that Sue Ane was indeed buck naked behind the frosted shower glass ... sigh, if only the film were made with today's norms, we'd see it all...)

Screencaps of the wonderfully busty MILF Sue Ane from the TV show Love Boat, Season 4 Episode 10 (aka "the Cleavage Episode" ), recently posted on youtube. Judiciously cropped to focus our attention where it belongs; unfortunately a fuzzy grainy video tape original, but until they issue a DVD, it's the best we can get. Enjoy.

I just ran across a newspaper article from July 1966. Under the title “Sue Ane Langdon isn’t Prudish about Nudity”, Hollywood columnist Earl Wilson reports that she was approached to do a Playboy Playmate layout. “They pay like $3,000 for the spread and it was important. I took it. Playboy approached me. But that exposing your body for two or three pages scared me; then I got the Steve Allen show for two or three shots and I didn’t need it. I gave up the idea.”

Damn you, Steve Allen!!! That would have been 1958, Sue Ane would have been 21 or 22 years old at the time of a Palyboy Playmate shoot and looked like this:

A Playmate spread of Sue Ane with fold-out pin-up (like the one Stella Stevens would do in 1961) would have been epic!!! What a tragically missed opportunity!

In another part of the same column, Wilson writes that in the movie A Fine Madness “she has a seduction scene with a rug cleaner played by Sean Connery, which landed her in Playboy magazine pretty much in the nude. ‘About Playboy, I hesitated,’ she admitted. ‘Maybe my aunt and my mother will have some comments and they haven’t told my Aunt Harriet yet. But if she says anything I’ll tell her I was born that way and I can’t understand why people are so prudish about nudity, anyway. It’s all publicity, that’s all it is, publicity’.”

What a doll!!! Gotta love that woman…

Ran across this newspaper mini-interview that reflects the Oh-so-typical frumpy "I'm shocked!" attitude so common in newspapers of 50 years ago (but some things never change: this "Don Alpert" fellow sounds like he could fit right in on the set of "Fox and Friends" today...).

The interviewer, bless his heart, also seems too clueless to have understood Sue Ane's delightful put-on: "[my bottom has] become my hallmark. I have to back into places so people will recognize me" The line goes right over his head...

Reminds me of the quip by perpetually-nude Andrea Rau in a German magazine about 1970: "It's gotten to the point that people don't recognize me until I take my clothes off."

Here you go:

From the Arizona Republic 6 July 1967
Sue Langdon Bare-ly Bothered By Her Kind of Filmy Exposure
By DON ALPERT Los Angeles Times Service

HOLLYWOOD—Just when you think Hollywood has done all it can to glorify women and their various parts, along comes a hitherto-over-looked area. Perhaps it’s due to the rise of the miniskirt or the decline of the neckline. Whatever, Hollywood’s latest focus seems to be on Sue Ane Langdon’s unique and highly specialized contribution to contemporary filmmaking. TO EXPLAIN: In “A Guide for the Married Man,” the titles are superimposed on Miss Langdon as she walks away from the camera. At various times in the ‘comedy,’ the camera zooms in on her as she walks in a southerly direction. In “The Round- ers” she emerged bare-bottomed from a swim with Glenn Ford. In “A Fine Madness,” she had a nude scene with Sean Connery.

Miss Langdon views her experiences with typical Hollywood candor. “Let’s face it. There’s this thing about nudity and stuff. But your greatest paintings— they’re naked. There’s nothing dirty about that view. It’s art. I DON’T take pornographic pictures. They’re done with fun in mind. In “The Rounders” we go skinny dippin’ and when we come out and turn around the rear end is exposed. The censors insisted in writing 'censored' across our bottoms. Now tell me, what’s wrong? Everybody’s seen a bottom. And really, I wanted my bottom there. It was a healthy exposure of a funny situation. You laugh at it. As a matter of fact, that’s become my hallmark. I have to back into places so people will recognize me.”

NEVERTHELESS, Sue Ane is getting a lot of exposure because of it. “This fella in New York asked me—doesn’t it make you feel bad being ogled in Playboy? I feel if they’re dirty guys, that’s their problem. I’m doing it in fun and I hope it’s received that way. There really wasn’t a heck of a lot exposed. Mostly the side.” Apparently, this has had little effect on her eight-year marriage to writer-director Jack Emrek. “He feels, like I, that I have talent and it should be expressed. We feel a woman should work to be occupied. Sure, you can do the dishes and clean house but it doesn’t keep you stimulated. Work should be just as much fun as anything else.”
