San Diego Ranks No. 2 in Nation for Solar

Solar energy has found an accommodating place on rooftops across the county and according to a report that compiled numbers from major metropolitan areas, San Diego finished second in the nation for solar capacity — in the total amount installed as well as on a per-person basis.
“San Diego is a sunny place and it’s sort of natural for people to think, let’s tap into the sun and be able to use the energy that’s heating up our roofs and turn it into electricity,” said Dan Jacobson, director of Environment California, which released the “Shining Cities 2020" report.
San Diego amassed 420.4 megawatts of total installed solar photovoltaic (PV), the technology that converts sunlight into direct current electricity by using semiconductors. Only Los Angeles racked up more solar PV, with 420.4 megwatts.
On a per capita basis, that breaks down to 294.8 watts for greater San Diego. Honolulu came in first place by a wide margin, with 840.9 watts per person.

Post 141 of the 'Good News' thread was about tiny homes, and I had written 'It's too bad that most cities (including San Diego) have not allowed tiny homes, xcept those on wheels that are put on mobile home lots.)'Well, that has changed:


San Diego Approves Ordinace Allowing Tiny Houses

San Diego became the first city in the region Tuesday to allow homeowners to install movable “tiny houses” in their back yards.
City Council members said before unanimously approving a tiny houses ordinance that tiny houses will help solve the local housing crisis by creating another affordable option for low-income residents that doesn’t require a taxpayer subsidy.
Similar to granny flats, movable tiny houses can also help homeowners cover their mortgage payments by creating a new revenue stream for them.
“It’s a win-win-win all the way across the board,” Councilman Scott Sherman said. “It’s a small bite of a large elephant when it comes to solving some of our housing challenges in the city.”
San Diego is following Denver, Sacramento, Los Angeles, Fresno and San Jose in approving tiny houses, which are considered ideal for college students, senior citizens and medical caregivers.

Today's Union-Tribune has an article entitled Average Home Down Payment Exceeds Year's Income in S.D.. Unfortunately, it has been put behind a "for subscribers only" screen.

But I looked up the source mentioned in it and found this: Average Down Payments on Homes Across 50 Largest U.S. Metros Top $46,000.
San Jose and San Franscisco had the two highest average down payments, San Diego was third.
But San Diego and Los Angeles were the two with the highest ratio of down payments to median household income, over 100%.

Badges on Sale Next Week for November Comic-Con

Fans of Comic-Con who’ve been longing for a return of the hugely popular gathering will get a chance next week to buy much coveted badges for a special Thanksgiving weekend, in-person convention at the San Diego Convention Center.
Organizers of the “special edition” Comic-Con International emphasize that those interested in purchasing a badge for the three-day event will need to have a valid member ID account. Badges will go on sale online, shortly after 11 a.m. next Saturday.
In keeping with state health guidelines that go into effect Monday for “mega” indoor events of 1,000 or more, Comic-Con will be requiring proof of a COVID-19 vaccination or a negative test taken within 72 hours of each day of attending the convention.
It is also requiring facial coverings regardless of vaccination status, a condition that’s likely easier to fulfill for cosplaying enthusiasts dressed up as superheroes.
