With my first car, a 1968 Vauxhall Viva, the starter motor often jammed. I used to carry a heavy hammer with me - a few bangs from that always sorted it.

Loved driving my BMW in Germany, not just for the unrestricted sections of autobahn, but because the standard of driving on the autobahn was so high. Though you did have to look carefully into your mirrors before pulling out, as that little dot could be a Porsche 911 doing 170 mph.

Slowest car was my first one- a '67 Ford Galaxy Coupe. Eight cylinders, got about 12 miles to the gallon, and was a beast. Towards the end it had a cracked manifold and the mechanic had to install a choke knob to start it, like you'd find on a riding lawnmower. But it was my first car and I loved it. Hope it went to a loving home.

I had one of these in 1984 plus several other Corvettes from 1983-1987.

We would buy used Corvettes and Stingrays from the free used car sales classified books you get at the grocery store or convenience store and then spend a couple of $1000 or so to clean them up, fix minor things, and sell them to people on the East Coast.

Apparently back in those days Corvettes and Stingrays were hard to find up there.

Best car I ever owned is still a 1986 Jaguar XJ-6 Vanden Plas metallic silver which I bought in 1987 from a doctor going through a messy divorce for $14,000 and if I remember correctly, the new model price at the time was $35,000.

This reminds me of my wife's Fiat Seicento Sport.
Germans make cars sporty by improving the suspension, fitting bigger engines and uprating the brakes.
Italians make cars sporty by removing the brakes altogether.
Having observed the driving in Rome, I can see why they are considered an optional extra for the cautious driver.

Slowest?

Dad had a 1981 Mercedes 200 Diesel that he gave me in 1990.

I think it had a 55 HP engine.

0-60 mph in infinity!

You pedal it to the metal and it still took 5 minutes to get it on the highway to 60 mph and by that time, you have a long line of cars behind you on the entrance ramp, passing you unsafely and illegally on the shoulder and giving you the famous Texas middle finger salute.

I wonder if that Benz is worth any money.

I sold it to some guy in 1994 who was buying the very first car for his teenage son.

It had over 300,000 miles on it and I gave the guy a good deal.

Were you a careful owner? Did you look after it, service it regularly, only drive it to go to church on Sundays (firebombing churches is a bad habit BTW, I've been meaning to talk to you about that).

It was garage kept and both Dad and I do not smoke.

Never been wrecked and it went into MB for regular maintenance.

came across this, a Smart Car in a pickup truck trim with 6 wheels for $16,000.

I wouldn't be caught in it.
