Rats multiply so quickly that in 18 months, two rats could have over one million descendants.

That would have been really bad news for Walt Disney, he was afraid of mice and rats!

Oh yes I agree about Jeremy Brett and perhaps he most typified the quintessential Holmes especially with his features but that was in television not film-Basil Rathbone had a legendary profile and played a lot of villainous roles-As Guy of Gisborne in 'Robin Hood' with Errol Flynn-the sword fighting sequence is one of the best on film. Jeremy Brett was in My Fair Lady singing-although we know his voice was dubbed as was Audrey Hepburn's.

The word "Checkmate" in chess comes from the Persian phrase "Shah Mat," which means "the king is dead."

For our foreign members the first picture is of actress Yootha Joyce and comedian Charlie Drake both sadly died some years ago.

Life changing this useless fact, but.......

Evidently, American Airlines saved $40,000 in 1987 by taking out one olive from each First Class salad!

I was in Meiringen (Switzerland) once and there is a big hotel that uses the slogan "Sherlock Holmes stayed here" or something to that effect. Of course the famous Reichenbach falls are near there, but still... advertising that a fictional character had a room there...?

Apparently a lot of people still try and find 221B Baker St-which physically currently exists as a location-but didn't in Conan Doyle's day. Wiki has a good article on it-and includes the fascinating snippet that the Abbey National Building Society occupied the premises spanning 219-229 Baker street from 1932 till ca 2005 -and employed a full time secretary to answer mail addressed to Sherlock Holmes....now THAT's life imitating art....

IIRC. they tried to get the Post Office or whoever, to renumber the buildings back in the late 1980's, so that the Sherlock Holmes Museum (and tea rooms!) which is situated about 80 yards from the Abbey National building going towards Regents park, could actually set up a department to answer the letters sent to number 221b Baker Street. The powers that be would not play ball however!
I used to walk past the building everyday, and during opening hours there was always a 'policeman' outside in Victorian attire.
