The author had to stop supporting and distributing DVD Decrypter after Macrovision went after him so now you can Google it to find numerous mirrors:

http://www.dvddecrypter.org.uk/
http://www.mrbass.org/dvdrip/

I use DVD Decrypter and AutoMKV for creating AVI/MP4/MKV files from VOB files but I have not settled on a editing program for video.

I've ripped many DVDs using WinX DVD Ripper. You can rip to AVI, WMV, MPEG, MP4, FLV, iPod, iPhone, and many other formats.

Default VOBs to .AVI (iSofter program or other)

So I have been buying VHS tapes of OOP stuff to convert here for the forums.
I am converting w no problem. The deck creates a DVD disc (even D/L) w VTS folders which contain VOB files.

I currently have iSofter Platinum (for about $60.00!) which doesn't want to convert the DVD to .AVI files.
The tutorial on the site is written poorly w English as a second language and tech supp't does not respond.

Basically, I should be able to open program - choose source (my DVD drive) and "encode" w the chosen output format (Divx AVI etc).

It does not work. I tried to add the VOB files themselves rather than choose the straight from DVD option. That seemed to scan/analyze the VOBs, but then nothing happened.

Is anyone familiar w that program?
If not, is there a FREE program to convert VTS folder w VOBs ?

I found PRISM VIDEO CONVERTER and that at least worked w the VOBs but all it did was convert them to 2 different AVI files that are not joined (it appears it took the VTS folder and converted all the VOB files into AVI files - therfore 2 diff files)

I am trying to get 1 AVI file.

Can anyone help?

Thank you !!!

Taking a look now - it says the files "appear to be MPEG" and asks if I want to index- I have said both yes & no.
It then says can not open file!!

AGH!

I will try to learn some more - Thanks for the suggestion.
Maybe the deck converts it to some files that can not be altered ??

Who knows.

Thanks for the tip _ I will get it somehow.

Virtualdub in combination with fcchandler's MPEG2 plugin works very well for me

Virtualdub
Plugins

Links come from Videohelp

I copy the vob files to HD, then open them with Virtualdub. Really a piece of cake now. If you need to combine vob files first, you can do that with VOBmerge.

I mostly use "Dr.DivX", easy to handle program.
Downside is that you can only encode to DixX.

With encoding from DVD format you will in most cases first need to copy the files to (one of) your hard disk(s), most programs will not allow working stable from a DVD drive. Thats likely why there is the error with Avidemux as it can not write the "index" it builds to the DVD, in hard disk folder it could.

Good option would be perhaps AutoGK. Just keep in mind that video encoding takes experimenting and a bit of luck and brightness to find your way.
