The inspiration for Bluebottle was "the oldest boy scout in the world" called Ruxton Hayward-you can find him singing on youtube-just type in his name to search.
Here is probably one of the greatest pieces of radio comedy dialogue you will ever hear. It is obviously taken from 'Heroes of Comedy' which ran on Channel 4(now More4) in the late 90's and features Eccles and Bluebottle. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSSGiA4f5cs

G.T: Here's a photograph of a five pound note.
Neddy: Thanyou, I'll spread on my cheque book at once! On another recording, I think it might be 'Lurgi strikes Britain', they even play a gramaphone recording of a five pound note!

I recounted earlier the story I heard about the first meeting of Peter Sellers and Spike Milligan, well here's the story told by Harry Secombe of his first meeting with Spike.............
Sorry, can't rememeber where it actually was, north Africa I think, but..... Somebody fires a bloody great big howitzer that isn't anchored down and the gun goes sailing of the side of a wadi or some such escarpment. Meanwhile, down at the bottom of said escarpment, British soldiers are busy writing their memoirs...........when the aforementioned howitzer comes rolling right through the middle of the camp taking all the tents etc. with it! A man comes running up to Harry Secombe and says in his best Eccles type voice,'Der, has anybody seen a gun?!' Spike naturally.......

Don't forget Sir Harry's reply: "Ah, what color was it?"

G.T.: 'Neddy, do you know they have sent up a rocket to photograph the other side of you?'........ followed by sounds of hysterical laughter from Harry Secombe!
I do not know if the line was scripted or not, but judging by the laughter it was an ad lib. They certainly seemed to have a good laugh making the programmes!

Case of the Dreaded Batter Pudding Hurler of Bexhill on Sea
Neddy as policeman, "Madam, can I help you I'm a Constable" Minnie "What's the difference between a policeman and Constable?" Neddy "They're spelt differently!" Neddy asks Henry about Minnie "Do you know this woman?" Henry "Yes this is Minnie Bannister the famous poker player, give her a poker and she'll play any tune you like-r"

Neddy: 'Miss bannister, didn't I meet you on the stairs?'
In another episode..... G-T: 'I'm the man in white.' Neddy:' But you're all black!' G-T: ' Yes, on the way here I fell down a coal hole.' Neddy, (talking to another person): ' I suppose you fell down a coal hole too?' Ray Ellington;' Man I did not!' They probably couldn't get away with that now.

Ray Ellington was the butt of many jokes about his colour-i think he played a character called Sgt Throat but it was that time when you could make fun of blacks, indians etc-but Spike & Peter grew up in India(or at least in Peter's case he went there a few times) and did the kind of accent which might be funny to us, but everyday to them-same with the Jamaican accent-we find it incomprehensible at times-due to the patois, but do one on tv or radio now and you are had up for racism. It always made me wonder do Jamaican people get annoyed when British born comics, whose families might have have West Indian roots, do the accent?
