I appreciate the love for my Purple Heartbreakers. Of course, it didn't matter.....again They have broken my heart so many times I can't count them all.

I agree about the Saints game. They went after Favre the same way they went after Kurt Warner the week before. I think that one hit Warner took on an interception return hastened his retirement. There could have been some penalties against the Saints but that's not why they lost. AP fumbled alot during the regular season, I think he lead the league, and it just got worse in the playoffs. He came back pretty strong in the 4th quarter and I still think he is a great player, but he needs to cure his fumbleitis. The real killer for the Purple was the 12 man on the field call with less than a minute left in the game. Pushed them out of FG range and made them have to pass the ball. Favre interception......lame OT rules.....Saints win toss......FG.....Saints win......I sob. Do I sound bitter?

Default Yankees, Habs, Steelers, Giants

Jeez....at least you guys support some teams that actually win some championships. I'm jealous.

Gotta love those Steelers! Even though they crushed my Purple in the SB so many years ago, I really like that franchise. The Rooneys do it the right way and they always seem to be competetive. Loved Cowher when he was the coach!! That guy rocks! Talk about passion! It should be interesting to see how they do this year w/ all of Big Ben's troubles. We need to get some more North Americans together and start an NFL thread on VEF. I think most of our UK and Euro brothers could give a crap but there is enough Yanks and Canucks to get this thing going. What say you?

I'm always down for some NFL talk, but the football thread name has already been taken. I accidentally clicked on it & quickly found out that I was literally out of my league . We might have to call it the NFL thread or something.

What did it for me with the Steelers, was when the country needed to pick between them & Dallas back when I was a kid & they played against each other in the Super Bowl. The Cowboys may represent "America's Team" but the Steelers always represented the blue collar steal workers specifically & the middle class laborers loosely.

I never could stand the Cowboys being a Giants fan, but man do they got some hot cheerleaders or what? The Giants don't have any cheerleaders at all so.....

I don't know how old you are, but Fran Tarkenton was a hell of a quarterback. He goes into that group of hall of famers, along with Marino, Fouts and Jim Kelly as fabulous QB's who just missed winning it all.

Cowher the spit king??? hahahahaha Hard to tell when he was happy with a player or pissed off with him; he would always grab the facemask, pull them in close and scream!!! What a character...

Both the wife and I (who is also a Montreal Steeler fan) wanted Minnesota to come out of the NFC. Too bad...

Good idea.

Is there a way to go back and change the title of this thread? Could we make it the NFL and NBA thread?

I tried but I dunno if I can edit the title...

I've misspelled some titles on my posts in the porn section & couldn't change them either qwerty. It might just be a mod thing. If they can delete the thread, they should be able to edit it as well.

Wow, Fran Tarkenton! I have to say I feel a bit cheated, because by the time I was old enough to know what was going on, he had already retired. I 1st heard of him from the show "That's Incredible". I have seen the old footage though. The original scrambling quarterback! Another guy in my opinion who should have played out his career where he was loved. From what I hear, New York never showed him the love, but that's because if you want love in NY - you have to win & the Giants were really bad when he was here.

Well - Tabler was kind enough to change this now into the NFL and NBA thread, so we can jump back and forth between subjects. Thanks to him for that.

As far as Fran goes, I had to go back and confirm, but he was the Jim Kelly of the 70's (or maybe Jim Kelly was the Fran of the early 90's!!)

Poor Fran went to the Superbowl 3 times in 4 years and came away empty each year...

Such is life...I think that Drew Brees in San Diego has the makings of Fouts/Tarkenton/Kelly/Marino. Everyone else has a win...

Thanks to Tabler and you Qwerty for getting that done! Kudos! Let's try and recruit some Yanks from the forum to get on this thread so we can get it rocking when NFL season starts. I am a big NFL fan.

Qwert, I think you meant Philip Rivers in SD as Brees won it last year w/ Saints. After they beat the Purple Still bitter.

I remember Fran well. I was a wee Keefriff then but I wore the Tark's jersey religously. He was a great QB but struggled in the SB. Career stats for Fran in three SB games....46-89 passing, 489 yards,1 TD and 6 interceptions. Not that good but not all his fault and they got run up by some pretty damn good teams like the 73' Dolphins, 74 Steelers and '76 Raiders. I have read quite a few books about those Vikes years and Fran was not a well liked guy on the team. A great player but came off as selfish, arrogant, and hard to coach. Still a great player but, like the whole team, he could never get it all done. That is the story of my favorite team. So can I ask a favor of you guys? Stop bringing these painful memories up! I have gotten over the 70's pain, after years of extensive psycho therapy, and now I try to deal with the present like 2009, 2001, 1999, 1998,......well, you get the picture

Consider it done keefriff. I'll share some of my personal pain with you: The Yankees losing 4 straight to Boston after being up 3-0 in the ALCS in '04; & did I mention I'm a NJ Nets fan? There's nothing like supporting a team that gets no national coverage whatsoever! Even locally, the Knicks get 2 pages in the newspapers for every 1 page about the Nets. I actually can't wait for them to move to Brooklyn, so that they can finally get some recognition through the NY media. Those fans have been starving for a team over there since Walter O'Malley moved the Dodgers to LA.

I have to agree that Phillip Rivers will never win the big one. I just don't think he has the testicular fortitude to get it done. I had the Chargers & the Vikes getting to the Super Bowl last year, so it shows how much I know . That was just a disgusting performance from Rivers at home against a Jets team that backed into the playoffs.

Duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh:c onfused:

I gotta lay off the beer!!!

Right - I meant Rivers in SD, not Brees.

Talking about not performing in the playoffs. here's a little stat info concerning little Philip:

63.1% comp% 106 Td's 45 Ints 95.8 QB rating Reg season

58.5% comp% 8 TD's 9 Ints 79.2 Qb rating Playoffs 3 losses/4 wins

Quite the drop off - very good QB, but is he a playoff choker?
