Default Shogun ep09

spoilers

As overwhelmingly pleased as I was with Shogun ep08; I did not find ep09 to be nearly as compelling. Mariko's continually courting death for no discernable good reason, or not reason enough, wasnt as remarkable as her death in either the book (which I have already started rereading after 40 something years) nor is it a poigniant as her death in the Chamberlain mini series.

I was not pleased with the overall juvenile tone of this episode. The so-called "battle" was more like an alley skirmish; and the end assassination was unclear and poorly explained. IMO, it spent too much time on the former (mock)sisters conversation, and little enough on important summation of threads that have been building for several episodes.

My bet is, after finishing the book, I determine this was the 2nd poorest showing of the series, behind ep03.

IMO, this show needs at least 2 more episodes to finish properly, more likely 3.
Frankly, I would trash this episode altogether, and split this episode and the next into a proper Japanese honor drama instead of this hodge-podge and finale next episode.

I found the pacing in this episode rushed and therefore weak.
Certainly, the ending was so telegraphed as to be a non-cliffhanger.

Not happy.

This is the first episode that I've had issue with the story, not the portrayal or technical aspect.

I really didnt expect such blundering story-wise this late in what has been a really exceptionally good piece. Yes, I did remember what happened from years ago, but I expected a lot more depth than we got, and certainly more meaning. Also, by cutting to credits at the point they did wastes every last bit of drama that has been building up for the previous 9 episodes.
Foolish waste of story build-up. There should have been at least 7 more minutes of emotion. To build for 9 hours, then chop off the culmination in 1/2 second is; the characters deserved better.

E02 of Fallout. probably the best TV adaption of a video game I've see. I thought Walter Goggins would steal the show, but Aaron Moten is a serious contender.

I agree that Shogun seemingly is rushing to the end, much like the last three seasons of Game of Thrones.

I guess I should be glad they had the budget to get it this far......

X-Men 97 is pulling a lot of threads at once, but I think the original was like that too, every episode was so random you never knew what you were getting. The voice actor for Charles isn't right though, just sounds off. Not sure if it's the same guy or what.

Fallout

Never played the game but I really enjoyed the first season of this apocalyptic show. They did a great job of not only blending themes from the mid 50s to early 60s and the futuristic but also the placement of music that blended well in various scenes. I was surprised at how gory it was and the cameos from various actors. They did well with the creature designs and with the CGI deaging. A few of the episodes stall for a bit but they greatly aligned the past with the present story threads. I'm looking forward to season 2.

I played all the early Fallout games - and the landscape is pretty well captured in the series - the constant fights against rats, mole rats, wild dogs, gekkos, mutants, alien creatures, etc. are missing. Slavers are a big human element missing - the player could even sell his companions to slavers - if you wanted to play a bad person. As I understand it, Europe made them remove some children from the game as players were killing kids for the hell of it. One of the games gave the player the option to nuke a city - some people are sicker than others......

Watching The Nordic Murders series now (on PBS Masterpiece). It follows the usual formula of a detective balancing their personal troubles with solving murders in their area.

Here, the detective is a pretty, late-30s woman. With a troubled teen daughter, a troubled marriage, and a troubled relationship with her ex-prosecutor mother. Her area is a North German coastal town on the Baltic near the Polish border. It's a rough area, there's a murder or serious injury in every episode, and there's always a twist.

A good series so far. If you liked Bordertown. you'll like The Nordic Murders.

Pretty much Direct TV is letting me down, couldn't stream movies on HBO or Showtime - basically being lazy since I have most on blu ray or DVD - so I just cancelled those services. Wondering what Cable people use as Direct TV reception in my area seems to suck.

Once Shogun is done, nothing to look forward to - don't really care if I watch Season 2 of House of the Dragon later this year. Didn't think season one was that good.
