I don't live in the US but I often get the impression that even those African-Americans who go to college and use proper English are mocked or accused of "selling out". According to that logic, a black gang member is a proud African-American while a well-educated black person is nothing but a traitor. I think there are big efforts within the black community to counter this attitude. This is not a race thing but the result of the longstanding economic isolation of African-Americans. The economic status and the culture it creates shapes everyone's attitudes and values. Even low-income class whites are prone to accusing someone from their ranks of "forgetting their roots" if they climb up the social ladder by receiving college education.

All social animals have hierarchies, not humans only. We are never going to educate ourselves out of envy and invidia. These are, unfortunately, part of human nature and the more I consider it the less I can explain it. The phenomenon of the class-traitor is very real and can arise from a variety of motives, not always dishonourable motives; sometimes people simply cannot abide or tolerate the "them and us" version of life. Any social prejudice which opposes ambition is unhelpful to social progress. If belonging to criminal gangs and participating in crime is more authentic than working to improve your chances of a prosperous future inside the law, then the conformists will end up in prison.

Your statement is universal. If you try to better yourself through education, others will accuse you of trying to rise above your station.

I grew up in a largely working class area of Britain. Yet some seem to get upset if you were striving to achieve good grades at school.

It really annoys me when people just won't accept ,
I accept aboriginal culture, always have, and don't think that's a joke either or just empty words. Seriously, I hate it when I see any race discriminated against, also keep in mind I have no Anglo or Irish blood.

But there is no way we can change history, only learn form it.
It's when people don't want to let go of the past and just won't look forward instead that things will never change for the better.

I've no problem at all with Aborigines not wanting to celebrate Australia Day, none at all, it's their right.

This is the bit that counts to me .... anyone who is not of an Aboriginal blood line and hold up Banners like "You're On Stolen Land" well, then go back to wherever you're ancestors came form, and those who take a paid public holiday on January 26th, well they might as well go to work instead.

I welcome both cultures celebrating what suits their needs, but that Yarra City Council, get this .... full of the Rich Cafe Leftists ...... the activist kind who would cry in their cafe latte if you hid their ipad and, well, I'd be willing to bet heavily never even been to an Aboriginal Community in far North Queensland, remote parts of Western Australia etc ..... there's, err, no Alfresco dining there, wouldn't suit lifestyle.

I'd recommend to the Aborigenous to throw all the non-native Australian people in dark cells and make hamburgers, steaks and sausages from them.
