How old were you when you first reached up for the top shelf?
I vividly remember buying my first mag, the Best of Club No 11, from a quiet newsagent with no other customers. I didn't think I'd get away with it as I was only 15 at the time! The middle aged guy who served me was obviously sympathetic and let me leave the shop with my treasured possession and a bursting erection.
By the time I was 16 I was buying them every month knowing which newsagents I could use. On one occasion I nonchalantly placed a copy of Escort next to the till only to find that I'd lost the shiny pound coin necessary to buy it. After some frantic searching and an increasingly angry lady shopkeeper I had to admit defeat and return the mag to its place on the top shelf of delights. By now of course I'd stared longingly at the tight cotton panties of the cover girl and had to see what was inside so I went home to get some more money. I couldn't face going back to the same shop so tried a new one, this time I didn't do my normal recce, just walked in, grabbed the mag and walked to the till - only to find I was being served by a girl from my class at school! She never said anything, then or later, but it was embarrassing. Strangely enough, after that I always preferred to be served by women. |

Nicked 'em from my mate's dad's woekshop early, but probably bought my first in Brighton aged 21. We had a "cultural library" in our staff house, all standard early 80's British soctcore stuff.

I was 16 in the late 60's when I started buying 'top-shelf', though I dont remember them being ghettoed on the top shelf in the newsagents in those days. That period also saw the opening of second hand mag shops in the town where I lived, and they weren't too bothered about punters being a bit under 18. I was a lot more comfortable buying stuff there than in a corner shop. The great thing about VEF is I keep finding scans of mags or pics that I remember from way back then.

I was 13 -I had been wanking to grattan catalogue lingerie pages and holiday brochures for a while but was determined to buy an actual magazine. A newsagent near me had a good selection so i would go in and look longingly at the mags but could never drum up the courage to buy one so would just buy some chocolate bars and leave - that went on for ages - eventually one day i was standing looking at the mags when the woman serving said (IIRC) "oh just get the one you want, it will be better for you than all that chocolate" - I was 23 stones when I was 13 - but I couldn't reach so she got it for me, I was mortally embarrassed so just mumbled something, handed over my 60p and left with Mayfair vol 13 No 3

Late 60s in a Devon village. Starting when I was about 14.
Our newsagent was run by an enlightened German lady who basically seemed to think that girlie mags were no different from anything else and they were all mixed in with all the other magazines. So every week I would go in, collect the latest electronics magazines, Radio Times and a copy of Parade. No embarrassment at all. |

I was 16 but as I was (and am) very tall, I could easily get away with it with no questions asked. Just had to make sure the shop was empty as I never liked buying 'em in front of other customers.

Don't know exactly, guess I was 14 years old...
I 'd read all my parents magazines and all the magazines a friends brother had hidden is his room. Think the shop owner couldn't care less. Way better than the Wehkamp (homeshopping catalog) with the lingerie pages ;-) |

Not till I was 18. Too short and too nervous to do so earlier...

I think I was aged seventeen (or possibly eighteen) when I first bought a top-shelf magazine from a newsagents. I had first looked at mags three or four years earlier, but it took some time for me to graduate to the act of actually purchasing them through conventional channels, as it were.
