Clocks Went Forward Today
One less hour in bed so can empathise with this:
A Cherokee elder, baffled by the paleface habit of messing around with clocks, once asked: ‘What sort of person thinks that by cutting a foot off one end of a blanket, and then sewing it on to the other end, he gets a longer blanket?’

These are a few of my favourite quotes
These are a few of my favourite quotes
These are some quotes by authors unknown to me. If you know who should get credit, please send me a message so that a small fraction of my fathomless ignorance will be cured. On the other side of the coin, I have no reluctance to 'improve' anonymous quotes and make them mine. Sort of. An Expert is one who made three consecutive correct guesses An Expert is the one who predicts that the job will take the longest and cost the most Experts are people who think before they speak, but speak anyway Experts can tell you what can’t be done and why Experts take understandable subjects and make them confusing The Facts, although interesting, are often irrelevant The Fact that no one understands you does not mean that you’re brilliant Failing to plan is indistinguishable from planning to fail Failure can teach success A Failure is a setback, but it is also a setup to a comeback Failure is not fatal, and success is not permanent

Anne Frank
I am what a romantic movie is to a profound thinker - a mere diversion, a comic interlude, something that is soon forgotten. Dead people receive more flowers than the living ones because the regret is stronger than gratitude. No one has ever become poor by giving. I think it's odd that grown-ups quarrel so easily and so often and about such petty matters. Up to now I always thought bickering was just something children did and that they outgrew it. Human greatness does not lie in wealth or power, but in character and goodness. The question is very understandable, but no one has found a satisfactory answer to it so far. Yes, why do they make still more gigantic planes, still heavier bombs and, at the same time, prefabricated houses for reconstruction? Why should millions be spent daily on the war and yet there's not a penny available for medical services, artists, or for poor people? Why do some people have to starve, while there are surpluses rotting in other parts of the world? Oh, why are people so crazy? As long as this exists, this sunshine and this cloudless sky, and as long as I can enjoy it, how can I be sad? Everyone has inside of him a piece of good news. The good news is that you don't know how great you can be! How much you can love! What you can accomplish! And what your potential is! Human greatness does not lie in wealth or power, but in character and goodness. People are just people, and all people have faults and shortcomings, but all of us are born with a basic goodness. The only way to truly know a person is to argue with them. For when they argue in full swing, then they reveal their true character. Laziness may appear attractive, but work gives satisfaction. Think of all the beauty still left around you and be happy. What a wonderful thought it is that some of the best days of our lives haven't even happened yet. I have often been downcast, but never in despair; I regard our hiding as a dangerous adventure, romantic and interesting at the same time. In my diary I treat all the privations as amusing. I have made up my mind now to lead a different life from other girls and, later on, different from ordinary housewives. My start has been so very full of interest, and that is the sole reason why I have to laugh at the humorous side of the most dangerous moments. In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart. I simply can’t build up my hopes on a foundation consisting of confusion, misery, and death. I see the world gradually being turned into a wilderness, I hear the ever approaching thunder, which will destroy us too, I can feel the sufferings of millions and yet, if I look up into the heavens, I think that it will all come right, that this cruelty too will end, and that peace and tranquillity will return again. How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world. It's really a wonder that I haven't dropped all my ideals, because they seem so absurd and impossible to carry out. Yet I keep them, because in spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart. Writing in a diary is a really strange experience for someone like me. Not only because I’ve never written anything before, but also because it seems to me that later on neither I nor anyone else will be interested in the musings of a thirteen-year old school girl. Oh well, it doesn’t matter. I feel like writing. Our lives are fashioned by our choices. First we make our choices. Then our choices make us. Women should be respected as well! Generally speaking, men are held in great esteem in all parts of the world, so why shouldn't women have their share? Soldiers and war heroes are honored and commemorated, explorers are granted immortal fame, martyrs are revered, but how many people look upon women too as soldiers?...Women, who struggle and suffer pain to ensure the continuation of the human race, make much tougher and more courageous soldiers than all those big-mouthed freedom-fighting heroes put together! Where there is hope...there is life |
