Unhappy Guinness....

Fire officers have extinguished a blaze that has been
burning at the Guinness plant in Dublin.
Plumes of thick black smoke billowed across the city skyline
as a dozen fire crews battled the fire.

Makes you wonder how the likes of Sweden Norway & every other country where it really does snow, manage.
It's not just the UK, Clouddancer -- plenty of places have problems with light snowfalls, including non-Alpine regions of France and Germany. It really isn't just Britain

The only reason Nordic countries manage well is because we invest in winter services, and the only reason we do that is because we don't have a choice. We really would rather spend the money on beer, but you know...

It's a conspiracy, you know. They want to induce shortages so they can raise prices. Then when the crisis is over, they won't lower the prices. Smart thinkers, these Guinness people

It's the winter solstice, the days start getting longer from now on,this of course is the origin of Yuletide/Christmas.

Speaking of which, I am too. Keep well, Happy Christmas, see you in the New Year.

If I know him he will be glued to the test and will comment when he can.

I am going out drinking with him tomorrow, I'll mention your post.
I am not around too much over Xmas but will check in whenever I can.

Re Ian Bell: hard to comment too meaningfully on his contribution given that he hasn't made one worth a damn. If his selection at No 6 was intended to insure against failure then someone must have forgotten to pay the premiums.

My low opinion of Ian Bell's cricket is one of the worst kept secrets on VEF. One of the reasons why cricket is a great passion of mine is that, unlike say football, where weak/bad characters with skill, talent, flair, whatever are often successful and lionised, only the mentally strong will forge a successful career in the top flight at cricket. Ian Bell is talented: I have seen him play exquisite shots (his cover drives are immaculate), he even bowls a brisk and nagging medium pace which can ask awkward questions of good batsmen. What he lacks is plain grit in a tight place. We saw in both innings at Centurion Park how he showed no fight when England really needed him. His Gatting-esque ''leave alone shot'' in the first innings was deeply embarressing. It also put added pressure on the tail, frankly helping the South African bowlers to turn the thumbscrews, exactly the opposite of what we need from the No 6 batter.

Ian Bell: I vote get rid.

What is going on with Kevin Pietersen? He plays well and looks like scoring a century, then a stupid rush of blood and he's run-out by the length of the pitch. A batsman of his quality should not be giving his wicket away in such ridiculous circumstances!

With Broad, Swann and even Anderson all more than capable with the bat I dont understand Bells inclusion to the side at all. England would be far better off playing the extra bowler. I know it's an old adage but lt's a true one, to win a test match you've got to take 20 wickets and you're always going to struggle with just four bowlers.

I've just read that, as from early next year, first-class postage will increase to 41p!! It wasn't all that long ago when you could send a first-class letter for 22p.

I don't usually spout on about ads (well not since Boot's Xmas ad with "Here Come The Girls" - the original version), but what about the "Flora" perfume ad for Gucci?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykXkmVURI-w

Using a version of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" which is absolutely haunting elevates this commercial from the mundane, imo...bravo Chris Cunningham!!
