Excellent list. I would nominate the doe-eyed Jamaican-American Rosanne Katon for PMOY, 1979; Venice Kong (another Jamaican-American) would have been an obvious, superb PMOY, however much I think Kathy Shower was a classic PMOY; Kerri Kendall, hands down, so to speak, should absolutely have taken PMOY 1990 (her video is still among Playboy's hottest ever); and Karin Taylor––yet another Jamaican-American beauty––should have taken PMOY for 1996

PMOY was never about the best looking or most popular. It was about which Playmate was best positioned to represent Playboy in the coming year during promotional events, and sometimes who was fucking Hef. The PMOY became far less important in Playboy's marketing strategy by the late 90s early 2000s.

While it was not Playmate of the Year, I read where Dorothy Stratten was considered as the 25th Anniversary Playmate--which was a big honor, but it was decided Candy Loving was the better choice as she had done some communications in college and would be able to handle the publicity better.

Dorothy as you all know DID get the PMOY and was on her way to glory when she was cut down by that bastard she married.

What compelling choices! I do think Patti McGuire,Kathy Shower, and Renee Tenison are classic PMOYs; however, the likes of the enduringly, justifiably popular, Candy Loving, Kerri Kendall, Karin Taylor (my fave Playmate of all time), the wondrous Patrice Hollis and astounding Alyssa Arcè as the real, true PMOYs are irrefutably inspired, compelling call-outs.

And yes, 1978's Rosanne Katon–-an undeniable classic late 1970s Playmate–-truly deserves placement on the Top Three of 1978, and she would have been an outstanding PMOY choice, in my view. EXCELLENT thesis!

As a sports fan, I sort of look at PMOY the way I do a hall of fame ... it's nice, but I don't need a hall of fame to tell me who was great or who was my favorite.

I think the run of Barbara Edwards, Karen Velez, Kathy Shower and Donna Edmondson might be the best stretch where Hef chose right, even though that leaves girls like Tracy Vaccaro, Penny Baker, Joan Bennett and Ava Fabian in second place. And Kerri Kendall is way too sensible, way too down to earth, to take up that kind of figurehead role.

PMOY was not necessarily about the best or most popular Playmate, or even who Hef was banging, it was usually whether the girl could pull off the role through a gantlet of promotional appearances when she could have other modeling or movie gigs.

Agree, it became a big PR position within the company....I met and chatted with Karen McDougal one day and she was just lovely, poised and friendly (reminded me of the pageant girls...) Amazing as it sounds, I did not know who she was until later that day when my boss brought me a signed headshot; our restaurant had a lot of celebs all the time...
BTW- Wasn't Donna Michelle ever a PMOM or PMOY? She was Hef's main squeeze for quite a while there in the early 60s, and an awesome one, too!
