One really cringeworthy song is an old one Everytime I Say Goodbye(I Die A Little) what? no you don't you idiot no-one dies when you say goodbye. Oh yes another one is What Do You Get(When You Fall In Love)-gruesome! and finally Esther, all versions of Killing Me Softly-how can you kill someone softly with your words-utter fellgacarb(that's for Battlestar Gallactica fans of the 80s-you will recognise that word)

Apart from the (British) National Anthem, the one compostion that causes me to want to reach for the Kalashnikov is 'Imagine' by John Lennon.
It's not so much the sentiments contained in the song that I object to, but merely the somewhat heavy-handed and dishonest manner in which they're expressed. What he was in fact calling for was the establishment in some form of a Marxist utopia, but he just couldn't bring himself to say as much. So he decided to skirt around the issue for fear of being branded a millionaire hypocrite and settle instead on what is arguably the most overrated and over-praised piece of juvenile doggerel in the history of music. Regards.

Agree about Hey Jude, you really find yourself screaming at the radio or television "please just finish the bloody song!" Purple Rain by Prince, what is that all about? It was dire back then and still is now. I quite liked Pass the Dutchie, but they had to change it from Cutchie because that meant handing round a spliff-and if they performed it on Blue Peter it was a no-no to sing about drugs on that show! I really hate 'You Can Keep Your Hat On-Tom Jones and Hot Stuff-Donna Summer though-truly toe-curlingly awful.

Oh I must add a modern one which is enough to have you reaching for the razor blades to slash your wrists-Christina Perry-Jar of Hearts-who the hell said that woman could sing-she is bloody awful and the song is only for those with no life or a teenager!

I can't 'hate' Minnie Ripperton Estreeter My Lil' Sis' used to sing that and the memory always makes me smirk - she used to hit all the notes in the melody too.., all the way until the "Dooby dooby doo doo"
The last line was just out of her range but the thought of it has me grinning like a Cheshire Cat I don't like it when people are too general in their choice, but I'm gonna have a go.. Practically Any & Every comedy song , even the mighty Spinal Tap ! dunno why , they should be good bedfellows, I love Music .. & I love comedy... but when they go together, I cringe & tire of it easily - the only exceptions for me are when the Music is comedic as well as the lyric (think John Shuttleworth or Les Dawson) |
