I thought he was great. Still have an album of him with all the jokes.
You can still find a lot clips of him on 'YouSubway'...

Funniest comedian ever for me was Peter Cook, stratospherically above anyone else, nobody comes remotely close to him imho.

In the second tier I would place:
Steven Wright, Emo Phillips, early Billy Connolly, Dave Allen, Bob Monkhouse, Bernard Manning, Peter Ustinov, Sean Lock, Bill Hicks, Ken Dodd, Ronnie Barker, Tommy Cooper, Jackie Mason, Spike Milligan, Chris Morris...

Channel 4 here in the UK produced a Comedian's Comedian program a decade ago... here is their top 50...

1. Peter Cook
2. John Cleese
3. Woody Allen
4. Eric Morecambe
5. Groucho Marx
6. Tommy Cooper
7. Laurel and Hardy
8. Billy Connolly
9. Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer
10. Richard Pryor
11. Chris Morris

25. Bob Hope
26. Harry Hill
27. Victoria Wood
28. Spike Milligan

30. Michael Palin
31. French and Saunders
32. Eddie Murphy
33. Bob Monkhouse
34. Rik Mayall

Every single one of which is either American or British - which goes to show how closely comedy is tied in with language and national culture.

Any top 50 list that doesn't have George Carlin in the top 10 (much less not on the list at all) isn't worth anything.

Which reminds me I forgot to include the great Australian Barry Humphries in my personal list of favourites Also early Jasper Carrott deserves a place too...

I saw an episode of "The New Statesman" in France once and the comedy did not seem to translate well at all... "I can't have sex now because I'm on my [bi]cycle" springs to mind...

So Mr Bean is funnier than the Goon Show ? Is it fuck ! Harry Hill ? Peter Kay ? I'm a big fan of Monty Python and Eddie Izzard but without Spike Milligan where would they be ?
