She had a peculiar career, but a fairly long one. I mean, from the early 1970s right through the mid 2000s: thirty years in that biz. Particularly considering she started back when it was much more of an underground thing than it went on to become as the 1980s and the accessibility of VCR's turned it into more of a legitimate industry.

I suppose I say peculiar because she did make a couple attempts to rebrand herself first as a legitimate actress then a little later as more of a softcore/late night cable type of thing, but it was odd because she was still doing hardcore work all the while: it wasn't like she pulled a Traci Lords where she suddenly didn't do any more hardcore stuff.

As the 1990s drew to a close, I found it a little bit...I dunno, slightly sad that Chambers went back to doing hardcore stuff...by then pretty much exclusively in the Young Guys Fuck Older Broads genre...sad in that one of the things Chambers had going for her from my perspective was that she was...pretty, you know? Especially back in the day. Late 1990s, she wasn't as pretty as she once had been, her weight was starting to balloon a bit, and watching her porn stuff in the late 1990s/early 2000s made me more...wistful than excited.

well-said Quackerson; I think life is tough in general as people age. lose careers, get forced out, adjust to empty nests, etc. It must be very hard for porn stars and that market must be brutal, Darwinian, corporate and yet, there it is like a company that has no soul. I wonder if anyone ever looked at PTSD or the trauma porn stars faced-some just have that steeled persona while others must have just been killed by it, literally and many, still haunted. She didn't die from it, but she didn't find her balance or thrive it seems. I'd like to know how many more have stories to tell, not cautionary tales but honest look-backs at why, how, and what porn did OR never did for them.

I mean, Chambers didn't portray herself as a casualty of the business or anything. She didn't profess to be virulently anti-porn a la Linda Lovelace, or claim that she was coerced or forced into doing porn a la Lovelace.

Chambers DID say that she was basically blacklisted from doing legitimate roles as a result of having done porn, and she got let go from one acting job in a non-porn, US-based film shoot during pre-production in the 1970s as a result of the notoriety of having appeared in Behind The Green Door. The other legit role she had, in David Cronenberg's Rabid, was a low-budget Canadian production, thus Cronenberg had the authority to keep her in her role (he knew who she was when he hired her). She did a pretty good job in Rabid, too. Sadly, that never helped materialize other legit roles for her, probably because it was a low-budget Canadian flick and wasn't widely seen at the time.

Like, Chambers never acted or appeared as if she was embarrassed by having been in adult films, but she was just one of those 1970s pioneers in terms of the onscreen talent along the lines of Seka, John Holmes and the like where they never really reaped whatever benefits there were to be had as the milieu became more acceptable: they got paid for the days shoot, retained no rights to the material whatsoever, and whatever adult film studio who owned the rights ended up selling the footage in perpetuity on vhs and later dvd format.

I saw Rabid in '77 at our drive-in theatre and it was bad, but she was hot in it tho I don't think I knew who she was at the time. What fascinates me about any "star" in the biz is how mercurial the career and lives are/were-such a contrast to what so many never knew and makes a person wonder how they all adjust after.

I sam MC when she appeared at R Paul Raymond's Revue Bar, doing a very sexy striptease. members of teh audience were asked to apply for 1 signed photo. As I had taken some pages from her Playboy spread to sign, I was delighted to get back a large envelope which contained a b&w signed photo to me. A bit later I got back yPlayboy photos, with a note of apologies "We forgot to give these to her"!
