Default Film critic Barry Norman dies

Film critic Barry Norman has died aged 83, his family says.

The journalist and former BBC presenter died in his sleep on Friday night.

A statement from his daughters, Samantha and Emma, called him "remarkable", adding: "He had a great life, a wonderful marriage and an enviable career."

Norman hosted BBC One's "Film…" show between 1972 and 1998 - its longest running host - as well as writing for the Daily Mail and the Guardian.

His literary agent, Curtis Brown, described him as "the defining voice of film criticism and insightful interviewing of screen legends from both sides of the camera."

Another icon of British television has passed on to that great screen in the sky, Barry Norman, whose father Leslie Norman was a respected film director and later tv director. Barry will always be remembered for his late night show Film...(whatever year it was) back when films were worth looking at for its content and not special effects laden(well some of them anyway)

He had a rye view of films and spoke his mind several times but also got to interview some really big Hollywood names, although he found Robert De Niro a real pain on several occasions at one point walking out of an interview. He was mimicked by many including Eric Idle and Rory Bremner who came up with a catchphrase "and why not!" and also had the accolade of being a Spitting Image puppet with that catchphrase. He did regular reviews for the Radio Times but mostly worked on Sky television(after defecting there in the 90's) He also has the distinction of working in the late 70's with Morecambe & Wise, being part of the 'troupe' singing and dancing(and tumbling) to 'There is Nothing Like a Dame" (it also featured Eddie Waring, Michael Aspel, Richard Baker, Peter Woods, Phillip Jenkinson(the former Film presenter) and others). That routine in the show became a massive ratings hit for M&W and still talked about 40 years on, but we all knew it wasn't them doing the acrobatics.
RIP Barry "And why not!"
