This laptop was multi-boot XP and Windows 7 with a third shared storage partition. I shrunk the partitions to create space for Linux and the Linux Swap partition. The Grub boot loader by default loads Linux, in my case Mint 18.1 Mate. If I select Windows 7 I get the Windows loader with the options of 7 or XP. Windows 7 & 10 can not be on the same machine as they corrupt each other. |

In the year 2013, Microsoft was attacked and a database data were stolen.
According to Reuters Microsoft Corp’s secret internal database for tracking bugs in its own software was broken into by a highly sophisticated hacking group more than four years ago, according to five former employees, in only the second known breach of such a corporate database. The company did not disclose the extent of the attack to the public or its customers after its discovery in 2013, but the five former employees described it to Reuters in separate interviews. Microsoft declined to discuss the incident. The database contained descriptions of critical and unfixed vulnerabilities in some of the most widely used software in the world, including the Windows operating system. Spies for governments around the globe and other hackers covet such information because it shows them how to create tools for electronic break-ins. The Microsoft flaws were fixed likely within months of the hack, according to the former employees. Yet speaking out for the first time, these former employees as well as U.S. officials informed of the breach by Reuters said it alarmed them because the hackers could have used the data at the time to mount attacks elsewhere, spreading their reach into government and corporate networks. A highly skilled group of hackers (Morpho, Butterfly and Wild Neutron) exploited some unfixed vulnerabilities in Java. This could explain partly the numbers of upgrades we had to endure. |

New malware: BadRabbit
A new malware has appeared.
Its name is BadRabbit and it is a descendant of Petya, that is to say it is a new ransomware. This ransomware attacks the networks and it is very nasty. It attacked many enterprises in Russia and Ukraine. but also in Germany and other countries. The infection process begins with a false install program of Adobe Flash which was downloaded on compromised websites. It uses a false Symantec certificate. When the infection is done, the system restarts and the final user is confronted with a screen asking for a ransom. I would advise extreme caution when going on dubious websites. Do not accept the download of Adobe Flash from them. This could be a fake. If you need the latest version of Adobe Flash, you should go on Adobe website directly. Windows 10 Fall Creators Update
The last Windows 10 update is not a success.
Luckily few users got it, for now. This update brings a bug: Some applications cannot be launched anymore. The applications still exist but must be launched through a work-around. For those who are still not concerned, I advise delaying this update (if they can). |

My experience has been around 70/30:
Around a month ago I picked up a reconditioned laptop loaded with 10. It was daunting jumping from Windows 7 (!), but I adjusted quickly and find it not all that different. What HASN'T gone well is (wait for it...) trying to activate my copy. I've gotten around fine as it is, but it irks me no end that Microsoft is near impossible to deal with. __________________ Just because: The lovely Hitomi Tanaka

I started out with version 1607 last spring, but was given the 1703 Creator's Update almost right away. I made sure my C: drive was fully backed up, then I let 'er rip. Haven't had any problems with it. The new Fall update contains a number of security features, but I will let others be the guinea pigs for this one.

I just keep the update service on disabled, so I can delay the updates, so you can delay on Home too, but you must know what to do.

Microsoft spying
We all know Microsoft is spying on us.
To-day I went to Kaspersky's website and was interested by their policy of using cookies. I was surprised by the number of cookies I had to deactivate. Especially Microsoft's cookie was the only one I could not deactivate. This is not really surprising. When doing a complete scan by my AV I once had a Microsoft file considered a malware. Happily I do not rely only on that, I also use AdBlock on my copy of Firefox which is very efficient, judging by the reactions I obtain on some websites. |

They're all spying on us and we let them do it! Microsoft, Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, etc. It's all there lost somewhere in the T&C's that everybody clicks to say they've read and understood even though 99.99% of people don't bother reading them.
