Default Not all is black or white...

No doubt Zbigniew Brzezinski was a violent russophobe as deep as it gets, but regarding several pivotal strategic questions like long term relations to China and also Iran he was certainly a voice of reason and moderation.

During the last 15 years e.g. he constantly argued against neocon, pro-israel or simply lunatic people who wanted to attack Iran and consequently creating a catastrophic disaster in the entire Middle East that would have dwarfed the current carnage in Iraq, Syria and Yemen by far. The ´nuclear deal´ with Iran reached by Obama with Tehran in 2015 was steadfastly defended against deluded critics by Zbig.

Default R.I.P. Ken Ackerman (1923-2017).

Best remembered as the soothing announcer on the overnight music program “Music ’Til Dawn” on KCBS he joined the station at age 20 in 1942 when it was still KQW he left in 1995 at 73 “They fired me,” he recalled in 2010 still sounding somewhat incredulous died age 94 of natural causes.

Default Blue Peter presenter John Noakes dies at 83

Beloved television presenter John Noakes has died after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

The national treasure was the longest-serving host of Blue Peter, and was a household name in the 1960s, 70s and 80s.

He was famous for the phrase "Get down Shep" as he tried to control the show's excitable Border Collie.

His family said in a statement to The Telegraph: "John Noakes, died peacefully on Sunday morning May 28th. He had endured and suffered from Alzheimer's over recent years and whilst he will be greatly missed by his wife, family and many friends his release from continuing ill health must be counted as a blessing.

"His many escapades with his faithful companion Shep, during his time with Blue Peter, will live on in many peoples memories and that is how his family would like him remembered."

RIP

I am truly upset by that news. John Noakes was another childhood hero of mine, a real daredevil and not afraid to do some incrfedibly dangerous things that would give Health and Safety nightmares these days. An example of this was the late 70's when he climbed up, without a helmet, rope or any other means of harness, Nelson's Column in London(Trafalgar Square) to give a clean and discovered loads of bird muck on his hat! More famous was the time he set a new record for a civilian parachute freefall jump.

He left Blue Peter when the producers refused to let him keep his beloved dog Shep although later he acquired a new sheepdog. John also did offshoots of Blue Peter making a travel-around-Britain show called 'Go With Noakes'. He appeared occasionally on some tv shows including some Blue Peter reunions and was reduced to tears by Anne Robinson when she mentioned his dog Shep on a programme. When he retired he went to Majorca sailing his yacht The Pleiades(named after the constellation Seven Sisters) and two years ago wandered off and fell down a storm drain - luckily he was okay. I will remember him as one of the best Blue Peter presenters they had AND for his exploits (remember when he pulled his trousers to one side to show off the bruising he got from falling out of a bobsleigh at around 70mph? RIP Noakesy, you've earned it mate.

Though I seem to be unable to find it on the Net, I do recall when John Noakes announced that Shep had passed away. He burst into tears.

I remember the parachute jumps, climbing the Mast at HMS Ganges, howling with laughter when the baby elephant stood on his foot, but most of all when he and another man had the bobsleigh crash. Both had slid for quite some distance at quite some speed when the bobsleigh they were in crashed. When he finally stopped his reaction was to ignore his pain, leap up and run over to see how the other man was.

Another part of my childhood gone for ever. I hope the BBC do an obituary programme for him, it will be well worth watching.

RIP.

Nothing wrong with that though... I have lost several dogs over the years and cried openly at the passing of all of them.

As every year, the American cemetery Rhône de Draguignan hosted the memorial day ceremony, in tribute to all the US soldiers who fell during the landing in Provence and Operation Dragoon, which would liberate the South of France during the war. In the summer of 1944.
